Want to speak Spanish better? Interview yourself! Posted by on Sep 14, 2012 in Uncategorized

¡Hola, mi gente! ¿Cómo están ustedes?

Today I’m going to share a technique for being more fluent in Spanish (or any other language you’re learning): interview yourself!

So every night as you go to bed, think about how David Letterman would interview you, the questions he’d ask and the answers you’d give. Do that in Spanish, try to think of ways of using what you already know to give your answers. Preparing yourself is very powerful when we are going to speak in public of make a presentation. Or do you think interviewees don’t prepare what they say beforehand?

After doing this prep exercise before you go to sleep (or any time of day, it doesn’t matter), think of the structures and words you didn’t know when answering the questions and learn how they’re used. You don’t have to do that in only one day so take your time and spruce up your mock interview as you go along.

Another interesting technique is adding more information to what you say. For example, if you talk about your work in a sentence like

Trabajo con tecnología de la información.

try adding more details like

Trabajo con tecnología de la información hace muchos años y es un campo que me gusta muchíssimo.

You can also

  • add advantages and disadvantages
  • state your opinion
  • put sentences in the past, future, etc
  • tell a childhool story

among other things.

So, be creative and tell Letterman what he wants to know!

Ten un fin de semana lleno de cosas buenas. ¡Diviértete!
