Hello, there!

When you’re making small talk in Spanish it’s a good idea to learn to talk about your daily routine. We covered the basics of this in a post some months ago and now I’d like to show you a real-life dialogue.

The most difficult words and expressions are translated.

Pedro: ¿Cómo es tu rutina diaria, Fernando?
Fernando: Bueno… siempre me levanto a las siete, me ducho, tomo el desayuno y salgo a las ocho para trabajar.
Pedro: ¿Y a qué hora llegas a la oficina?
Fernando: A eso de las 8:30 si el tránsito lo permite.
Pedro: ¿Lees el periódico todos los días?
Fernando: No. Solo lo hago los fines de semana para mantenerme al tanto de las noticias, pero suelo ver el noticiero de la noche.
Pedro: O sea que no te acuestas demasiado temprano, ¿no?
Fernando: Alrededor de las 12.
Pedro: ¿Y no te sientes cansado por la mañana?
Fernando: De verdad que no. Siete horas de sueño para mí son suficientes.

rutina diaria = daily routine
bueno… = well…
llegar a = to get to (a place)
a eso de las = around … (time)
el tránsito = traffic
permitir = to allow
el periódico = the newspaper (also called “el diario” in some Spanish-speaking countries)
solo = only
los fines de semana = on the weekend
mantenerse al tanto de = to keep up-to-date with
las notícias = the news
suelo = I usually
el noticiero = the news (TV broadcast)
alrededor de = around … (time)
sentirse = to feel (yo me siento, tú te sientes, …)
de verdad que = actually

Siempre corro cinco kilómetros por día.
I always jog/run five kilometers a day.

María suele hacer los deberes de la escuela por la tarde.
María usually does her homework in the afternoon.

Mi despertador suena siempre a las siete de la mañana.
My alarm clock always goes off at seven a.m.

Nunca me acuesto antes de las diez de la noche.
I never go to bed before ten p.m.

A veces salgo con mis amigos los viernes por la noche.
Sometimes I go out with my friends on Friday evenings.

Raramente vamos en coche a la oficina.
We rarely go to the office by car.

No suelen llegar atrasados al trabajo.
They don’t usually get to work late.
