Stylistic value of a word in Swedish Posted by on May 31, 2016 in Grammar

I guess you all have been learning a lot of vocabulary that you don’t repeat and don’t really know in which situation you shall use them. When is it “jättebra” and when is it “väldigt bra” An easy way to group the vocabulary of synonyms for example is to make an arrow or horisontal line and list the synonyms from the top of the arrow to the bottom. On the top you should write words with high stylistic values like complex expressions and words used in fine literature for example and slang, bad words or words with little stylistic value in the bottom. But there are actually plenty of ways marking these differences, you could also use geometrical signs making the highest square on the top the biggest and the less stylistic value a word has the smaller the square is.

stilny

The words are not in any kind of special order but I have put them into Slang/Slang-neutral and Neutral/Higher Stylistic value categories.

As it follows from the top to bottom of the picture:

Words with higher stylistic value

-Storslaget!

-Makalöst!

-Lysande!

-Fantastiskt!

-Underbart!

Words with slang to neutral stylistic value

-Vad roligt!

-Vad trevligt!

-Festligt!

-Toppen!

-Vad häftigt!

Words with slang stylistic value

-Vad kul!

-Skojigt!

-Ball!

-Asnajs!

-Fett!
