Thai Ending Particles, wa, woi, fa, and foi Posted by on Nov 20, 2010 in Beginner, Culture, Intermediate

Today I’m going to teach you some bad words. Thais will never teach you these words because it isn’t polite to use them, but you know what? They use it themselves all the time. You don’t need to ever speak these words – but you will need to understand them! I hear it all the time, both men and women, young and old, girly girls and manly men.

The first ending particle is ว่ะ. The best English equivalent is ‘ f&%k’. Now, I mean equivalent in terms of rudeness and strength, not in actual meaning. Just tack it on the end of a sentence to give it a rude intonation. And as with the other particles, there are variations as well.

examples:

อะไรว่ะ?               What the f&%k did you say?
อะไรว๊ะ?               What the f&%k?

เป็นอะไรของมันว่ะ?   What the f&%k is up with him?
Now, ว่ะ is for when you’re still in emotional control. But if you lose it, you can get even more stressful with โว้ย. Generally, you need to raise your voice as you use it ‘properly’. If you say it in a calm quite manner, it’ll make what you say sound sarcastic. For example:

อยู่ในวัดมึงต้องพูดสุภาพน่ะโว้ย  You’re in an f’in temple, don’t f’in curse you dumbs&%t.

Then there is ฟ่ะ, ฟ๊ะ, and โฟ้ย. These mean exactly the same as ว่ะ, ว๊ะ, and โว้ย, except they are used mostly when being written, while the ว่ะ grouping is used mostly for when spoken.

The thing with learning a new language is that your mind isn’t offended by offensive words in another language. At least not at first. Like a 5 year old you might even think it’s fun to use them =P

Therefore you need to convince your mind that these words are in fact offensive when you use them, as thinking like a Thai will help you speak like a Thai.

Now enjoy probably the most offensive Thai song ever made . . . I’m sure you can pick out at least one word from it . . .

I really like your explanations of Thai words. Not many explanations have been able to make as much sense as yours for me. Do you think you could possible explain the particles สิ and ก็ I can never understand all the implied meaning with their different uses in context. Keep up the good work I will continue to read your posts 🙂

ก็ is not an ending particle, but you can find ก็ here:

I haven’t written about สิ yet, but probably should considering I have taught it to my students in the past. You may find these ending particles useful, too:
