Hay El-Mataar ‘The Airport Neighbourhood’ Radio Series (1) Posted by on Jan 10, 2018 in Arabic Language, Culture, Vocabulary

Today’s post is a comprehension task based on the first episode of a Syrian Radio series called Hay El-Mataar حي المطار or the Airport Neighbourhood. The neighbourhood is fictional and the aim of this series was to give a glimpse of Syrian civilians’ lives and how it was affected by the war in Syria.

In the first part, we are going to listen to a short excerpt (in Syrian Arabic) of the first episode and read a transcription of it. You should afterwards be able to answer few questions based on what you have heard. The next week’s post will provide you with answers as well as the Standard Arabic version of the dialogue to help you understand the dialogue better.

Here is a short report (video below) published by BBC Media Action, on what the project is about. This can give you some context and prepare you for the comprehension task below.

We’re only going to be looking at around 2 minutes of the first episode, following one main actor called Shereen who lost something precious and her dialogue with her neighbour Karakaas!

Here is a link to the episode (Make sure you scroll down and click on Episode 1) you’re supposed to be listening to while reading the transcription.

The transcriptions are based on three excerpts in the episode. The first is from 1.56 until 2.22. The second is from 5:28 until 6:10 and the third is from 10.20 until 10.50.
