Today, I have a listening opportunity for our advanced Arabic learners who are keen to improve their comprehension & listening skills. In today’s post, I chose a story about a Syrian refugee لاجئة سورية – Joelle – who left Syria in 2011 and moved with her family to Beirut and eventually settled استقرّت in Sydney, Australia. The story is narrated in two dialects: Standard Arabic العربية الفصحى and Syrian dialect اللهجة السورية . In both parts of this blog, you are going to listen to specific parts of the story in both varieties and work on a number of exercises.

The story we have today was taken from SBS Arabic 24 website. The audio clip of the story is 14:19 minute long, however we’re going to only listen to eight minutes of it, from 5:17 till 13:17. You can access the audio clip online here (or download it) and read the whole article here.

In the first part of this blog, we’re going to focus on the first half of these eight minutes, which mainly talks about Joelle’s attempt to reach Australia. After listening to these four minutes, you will need to fill in the gaps in four different texts, using the right word/phrase.
