When the nominal sentence is about being, i.e. if the verb of the sentence is \u2018to be\u2019 in English, this verb is not given in Arabic. Instead, it is implied and understood from the context. This can be confusing to some learners who speak European languages and are used to having a verb in each sentence. Consider the first 3 examples below where verb to be is not given in the Arabic sentence.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The subject of the nominal sentence is a noun or a pronoun, while the predicate can be a noun, adjective, preposition and noun, or verb. In the following examples the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">subject<\/span> is underlined:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 17pt;\">\u0647\u0630\u0647<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 17pt;\"> \u0645\u0642\u0627\u0644\u0629 \u0645\u0645\u062a\u0627\u0632\u0629.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cThis is an excellent article.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 17pt;\">\u0648\u0627\u0644\u062f\u0647\u0627<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 17pt;\"> \u0644\u0628\u0646\u0627\u0646\u064a.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cHer father is Lebanese.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 17pt;\">\u0646\u062d\u0646<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 17pt;\"> \u0645\u0646 \u0645\u0635\u0631.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cWe are in Egypt.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 17pt;\">\u0627\u0644\u0648\u0644\u062f<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 17pt;\"> \u064a\u0644\u0639\u0628.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cThe boy plays.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The subject of a nominal sentence is usually definite, yet an indefinite subject is allowed in some types of sentences that express existence or possession, and in this case the subject comes after the predicate. In the following examples the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">subject<\/span> is underlined:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 17pt;\">\u0647\u0646\u0627\u0643 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0623\u0648\u0644\u0627\u062f<\/span> \u0641\u064a \u0627\u0644\u062d\u062f\u064a\u0642\u0629.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cThere are kids in the park.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"rtl\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" dir=\"rtl\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 17pt;\">\u0644\u064a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0623\u062e<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cI have a brother\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" dir=\"rtl\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" dir=\"rtl\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">\u0639\u0646\u062f\u064a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0633\u064a\u0627\u0631\u0629<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cI have a car.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Verbal sentences begin with a verb, and they have at least a verb (<\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u0641\u0639\u0644<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">) and a subject (<\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u0641\u0627\u0639\u0644<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">).
