Yesterday, Google Middle East celebrated the 87<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of Mohammad Ghani Hikmat <strong>\u0645\u0640\u062d\u0640\u0645\u0640\u062f \u063a\u0640\u0627\u0646\u0640\u064a \u062d\u0640\u0643\u0640\u0645\u0640\u062a<\/strong> showing one of his famous monuments called \u201cSaving the Iraqi Culture\u201d. So, I thought it is a good chance to write a short biography about the man. Hikmat was one of the most important Iraqi sculptors <strong>\u0646\u062d\u0627\u062a\u064a\u0646<\/strong> and artists in our modern time. He studied sculpture under his teacher Jawad Saleim <strong>\u062c\u0648\u0627\u062f \u0633\u0644\u064a\u0645<\/strong> at the Fine Arts Institute and graduated in 1953. Then, he travelled to Rome where he got a sculpture diploma from the Academy of Fine Arts there in 1959. After that he went to Florence where he got a bronze casting certificate in 1961. He joined the Baghdad Group for Modern Art in 1953 and is considered one of the early founders of Al-Zawyiah <strong>\u0627\u0644\u0632\u0627\u0648\u064a\u0629<\/strong> (Angle) Group in 1967. He played an effective role in the national and the international art galleries. He also had his own galleries in Rome, Beirut and Bagdad. In 1964, he got the &#8220;<em>World Best Sculptor Prize<\/em>&#8221; from the Gulbenkian Foundation <strong>\u0645\u0624\u0633\u0633\u0629 \u0643\u0648\u0644\u0628\u0646\u0643\u064a\u0627\u0646<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Artwork<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Mohammad Ghani Hikmat designed a collection of statues and monuments in Baghdad that includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two Statues of Queen Scheherazade <strong>\u0634\u0647\u0631\u0632\u0627\u062f<\/strong> and King Shahryar <strong>\u0634\u0647\u0631\u064a\u0627\u0631<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Kahrmanah Monument <strong>\u0646\u064f\u0635\u064f\u0628 \u0643\u0647\u0631\u0645\u0627\u0646\u0629<\/strong> in the middle of Baghdad<\/li>\n<li>Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves <strong>\u0639\u0644\u0649 \u0628\u0627\u0628\u0627 \u0648 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0631\u0628\u0639\u064a\u0646 \u062d\u0631\u0627\u0645\u0649<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Ishtar Statue <strong>\u062a\u0645\u062b\u0627\u0644<\/strong> <strong>\u0639\u0634\u062a\u0627\u0631<\/strong> located at the Ishtar Sheraton Hotel of Baghdad<\/li>\n<li>Hammurabi <strong>\u062d\u0645\u0648\u0631\u0627\u0628\u064a<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Medicine City Mural <strong>\u062c\u062f\u0627\u0631\u064a\u0629 \u0645\u062f\u064a\u0646\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0637\u0628<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Statue of Al-Mutanabbi <strong>\u062a\u0645\u062b\u0627\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u062a\u0646\u0628\u064a<\/strong>; the famous Arab poet<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">The Baghdad Memorial\u00a0<strong>\u0646\u064f\u0635\u064f\u0628 \u0627\u0644\u062d\u0631\u064a\u0629<\/strong> in the Liberation Square in downtown\u00a0Baghdad and which depicts the struggle of the Iraqi people from the time of the British occupation to the Kingdom time and then to the current republic. The monument was started and designed by Jawad Sleim and then completed by Mohammad Ghani Hikmat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0 \u00a0Hikmat\u2019s artistic work extended outside of Iraq as he did sculpture work on one of the UNICEF <strong>\u0627\u0644\u064a\u0648\u0646\u064a\u0633\u064a\u0641<\/strong> gates in Paris. In the 1980s, he did magnificent sculpture work on three wooden gates of the Tiesta De Libra Church in Rome and was the first Muslim sculptor to do such a thing. This may have influenced him. However, the great influence came from the Iraqi civilization as the land of the first writing system. In the introduction of his book, 1994, Hikmat introduced himself as this; <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>\u201cIt is possible that I am another copy of the soul of a Sumerian or a Babylonian or an Assyrian or an Abbasid sculptor who loves his country.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hikmat had a strict work ethic that reflected his dedication to art making. To a far greater extent than most Iraqi artists, Hikmat was a public figure who completed work on a large scale for urban communities to appreciate. The tireless sculptor has been described by his friends and critics as vibrant and dynamic with unending energy and enthusiasm.
