Egyptian Arabic (EA) differs from Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) in certain aspects of grammar, word-formation, and pronunciation. Differences in pronunciation can be in producing consonants, vowels, clustering (i.e. how many consonants can occur in a cluster), and stress. For this time round, let\u2019s look at the differences in the pronunciation of consonants.<\/p>\n

In listening to a native speaker of Egyptian Arabic, especially Cairene, you must take heed to these MSA sounds: \u062c \u060c \u0642 \u060c \u062b \u060c \u0630<\/strong>. They are substituted by slightly different sounds, as in the table below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The \u062c <\/strong>j<\/em> in MSA is pronounced as \u0642 <\/strong>or more accurately as the English \u2018g\u2019 in game<\/em>. In foreign words, which are borrowed into Arabic, such as George, John, jam, jacket, the English j<\/em> is pronounced as in English, thus \u062c\u064f\u0648\u0652\u0631\u062c<\/strong>, \u062c\u064f\u0648\u0652\u0646, \u062c\u064e\u0627\u0645, \u062c\u064e\u0627\u0643\u0650\u062a<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As to \u062b <\/strong>th<\/em> of MSA, it is either pronounced as \u062a <\/strong>t <\/em>or as \u0633 <\/strong>s<\/em>. If the word the contains the sound \u062b <\/strong>is very common in daily usage, it is almost always pronounced as \u062a<\/strong>. However, if the word containing the sound \u062b <\/strong>is less frequent in daily usage, it is mainly pronounced as \u0633<\/strong>. In like manner, \u0630 <\/strong>is pronounced as \u062f <\/strong>in common words but as \u0632 <\/strong>in less common words.<\/p>\n

However, the case of \u0642 <\/strong>is somehow interesting, as it, in a large number of cases, retains its MSA pronunciation. Some examples of these are \u0642\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0627\u0631 <\/strong>garaar <\/em>\u2018decision\u2019, \u0627\u0644\u0642\u064e\u0627\u0647\u0650\u0631\u064e\u0629 <\/strong>al-gaahirah <\/em>\u2018Cairo\u2019, and \u0631\u064e\u0642\u064e\u0645 <\/strong>ragam <\/em>\u2018number\u2019.<\/p>\n
