The singular refers to a single entity, the dual refers to two entities, and the plural refers to three or more. Forming the dual and plural forms from the singular is usually straightforward. This is done by adding the number suffix to the end of the singular form. This post is about how dual nouns and verbs are formed and how their formation changes when they occur in different positions of the sentence.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15940\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/arabic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/05\/nominal-verbal-singular-dual-forms.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/arabic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/05\/nominal-verbal-singular-dual-forms.png 600w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/arabic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/05\/nominal-verbal-singular-dual-forms-350x243.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dual in Arabic is marked by a suffix called <strong>\u0623\u064e\u0644\u0650\u0641\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0627\u0650\u062b\u0652\u0646\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0646 <\/strong><em>alif al-ithnayn<\/em> \u2018the alif of dual\u2019. It is simply a plain <em>alif<\/em> <strong>\u0640\u0627 <\/strong>that is added to the end of singular form of pronouns, nouns, and verbs. In the case of nouns and verbs, <strong>\u0646 <\/strong>is normally added after the <em>alif<\/em> when they are in the nominative case and indicative mood, respectively. This <strong>\u0646 <\/strong>gets dropped in the other cases\/moods.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Pronominal Duals:<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first person singular <strong>\u0623\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0627 <\/strong>has no dual form in Arabic. Both second person singular masculine and feminine have the same dual form, that is <strong>\u0623\u064e\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0645\u064e\u0627<\/strong>. The additional suffix, which is <strong>\u0640\u0645\u064e\u0627<\/strong>, is the dual marker. Likewise, the third person singular masculine and feminine have the same dual form, that is <strong>\u0647\u064f\u0645\u064e\u0627<\/strong>. That is, they remain the same regardless of their position in the sentence. For this reason, the <strong>\u0646 <\/strong>is not added to them; thus, there is no such thing as <strong>\u0647\u064f\u0645\u064e\u0627\u0646 <\/strong>and <strong>\u0623\u064e\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0645\u064e\u0627\u0646<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Nominal Duals:<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Singular nouns in Arabic are made dual by appending <strong>\u0640\u0627\u0646 <\/strong>to their ends. Therefore, singular nouns in the table above, <strong>\u0645\u064f\u0647\u064e\u0646\u0652\u062f\u0650\u0633<\/strong>; <strong>\u0644\u0627\u0639\u0650\u0628<\/strong>; <strong>\u0637\u064e\u0628\u0651\u064e\u0627\u062e<\/strong>; <strong>\u0645\u064f\u062f\u064e\u0631\u0651\u0650\u0633\u064e\u0629<\/strong>; and <strong>\u0637\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0650\u0628\u064e\u0629<\/strong>, become <strong>\u0645\u064f\u0647\u064e\u0646\u0652\u062f\u0650\u0633\u064e\u0627\u0646<\/strong>, <strong>\u0644\u0627\u0639\u0650\u0628\u064e\u0627\u0646<\/strong>, <strong>\u0637\u064e\u0628\u0651\u064e\u0627\u062e\u064e\u0627\u0646<\/strong>, <strong>\u0645\u064f\u062f\u064e\u0631\u0651\u0650\u0633\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0627\u0646<\/strong>, and <strong>\u0637\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0650\u0628\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0627\u0646<\/strong>, respectively. Essentially, <em>alif <\/em>is the dual marker, while the <strong>\u0646<\/strong> replaces the parsing marks that occur with the singular, namely <em>fatHah<\/em>, <em>DHammah<\/em>, <em>kasrah<\/em>, or their corresponding <em>tanween <\/em>in the case of indefinite nouns.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>\u0627 <\/strong>and <strong>\u0646 <\/strong>change to <strong>\u064a<\/strong> and <strong>\u0646<\/strong> when the noun is in an object position, after a preposition, or the second noun of a genitive construction. Hence, the dual marker is <strong>\u0640\u0627\u0646 <\/strong>or <strong>\u0640\u064a\u0646 <\/strong>depending on the parsing mark of the noun, as in the following table:<\/p>\n<table The definite noun (the noun with <strong>\u0627\u0644<\/strong>) gets <em>fatHah, DHammah, <\/em>or <em>kasrah<\/em>. Both (nominal) and (verbal) subject always get the nominative mark.
