To a change an Arabic sentence from active \u0645\u064e\u0639\u0652\u0644\u064f\u0648\u0645<\/strong> to passive \u0645\u064e\u062c\u0652\u0647\u064f\u0648\u0644<\/strong>, its verb must be transitive<\/a> \u0645\u064f\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u062f\u0651\u0650\u064a<\/strong>. That is, it must have at least one object \u0645\u064e\u0641\u0652\u0639\u064f\u0648\u0644<\/strong>. The sentence that includes an intransitive \u0644\u064e\u0627\u0632\u0650\u0645<\/strong> or non-conjugatable<\/a> \u062c\u064e\u0627\u0645\u0650\u062f <\/strong>verbs cannot be changed into passive. This post is about why passive is used in Arabic, and the change that the active sentence undergoes while changing it into passive.<\/p>\n

Why Passive?<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

A passive sentence means leaving out the subject \u0627\u0644\u0641\u064e\u0627\u0639\u0650\u0644<\/strong> of the sentence. In Arabic, the subject is omitted from the sentence if:<\/p>\n

(1) It is not important, as in these example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Change in the Active Sentence:<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

Apart from leaving out the doer of the action (the subject), the object \u0627\u0644\u0645\u064e\u0641\u0652\u0639\u064f\u0648\u0644<\/strong> becomes the grammatical subject of the verb, so it must agree with it in gender. In the table image above, you can see that the grammatical objects of the active sentences (i.e. the ones in orange) become the grammatical subjects of the passive sentences (i.e. the ones in blue). Also, the internal diacritical marks of the verb must change. With irregular verbs<\/a>, the weak letter is changed to another.<\/p>\n

Object-verb Agreement: <\/u><\/p>\n

In sentence (\u0623<\/strong>), the verb in the active sentence \u0633\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0642\u064e<\/strong> is in the masculine form. After it is changed into passive, \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0651\u064e\u064a\u0651\u064e\u0627\u0631\u064e\u0629<\/strong>, which is feminine, become the grammatical subject of the verb, so the verb must agree with it in gender, hence it becomes \u0633\u064f\u0631\u0650\u0642\u064e\u062a\u0652<\/strong> (i.e. \u062a <\/strong>which is the feminine marker is added to the verb). In sentence (\u0628<\/strong>), \u064a\u064f\u0646\u064e\u0638\u0651\u0650\u0641 <\/strong>becomes \u062a\u064f\u0646\u064e\u0638\u0651\u0650\u0641 <\/strong>in the passive (i.e. the \u062a\u0640 <\/strong>at the start of the verb is a feminine marker). In sentence (\u062c<\/strong>), the active verb \u0623\u064e\u062e\u064e\u0630\u064e<\/strong> becomes \u0623\u064f\u062e\u0650\u0630\u064e\u062a\u0652 <\/strong>in the passive because is \u0641\u064f\u0644\u064f\u0648\u0633\u064f\u0646\u064e\u0627 <\/strong>is feminine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

How Does the Verb Form Change?<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

Perfective Form of the Verb \u0627\u0644\u0641\u0650\u0639\u0652\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u064e\u0627\u0636\u0650\u064a<\/strong>: <\/u><\/p>\n

While changing the perfective form of the verb into passive, its type (i.e. regular or irregular<\/a>) and its structure (i.e. simple or complex<\/a>) determine how its form changes. That is,<\/p>\n

(1) if the regular (i.e. does not include a weak letter) perfective form of the verb is tri-consonantal \u062b\u064f\u0644\u0627\u062b\u0650\u064a<\/strong> and is weighed as \u0641\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0644\u064e <\/strong>on the Morphological Measure<\/a>, such as \u0643\u064e\u0640\u062a\u064e\u0628\u064e<\/strong>, \u0631\u064e\u0633\u064e\u0645\u064e<\/strong>, and \u0637\u064e\u0628\u064e\u062e\u064e<\/strong>, its faa\u2019<\/em> (i.e. the first letter) must be assigned \u0636\u064e\u0645\u0651\u064e\u0629 <\/strong>DHammah<\/em>, and the \u2018ain<\/em> (i.e. the letter before last) must be assigned \u0643\u064e\u0633\u0652\u0631\u064e\u0629 <\/strong>kasrah<\/em>. Hence, \u0643\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0628\u064e <\/strong>become \u0643\u064f\u062a\u0650\u0628\u064e<\/strong>; \u0631\u064e\u0633\u064e\u0645\u064e <\/strong>become \u0631\u064f\u0633\u0650\u0645\u064e<\/strong>; and \u0637\u064e\u0628\u064e\u062e\u064e <\/strong>becomes \u0637\u064f\u0628\u0650\u062e\u064e<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

(2) if the irregular (i.e. includes a weak letter) perfective form of the verb is tri-consonantal \u062b\u064f\u0644\u064e\u0627\u062b\u0650\u064a<\/strong> and is also weighed as \u0641\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0644\u064e<\/strong>, but its \u2018ain<\/em> (i.e. middle letter) is an alif<\/em>, such as \u0635\u064e\u0627\u0645\u064e<\/strong>, \u0628\u064e\u0627\u0639\u064e<\/strong>, and \u0642\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e<\/strong>, its faa\u2019<\/em> must be assigned kasrah<\/em>, and the \u2018ain<\/em> of the verb (i.e. the alif<\/em>) must be changed to yaa\u2019<\/em>. Hence, \u0635\u064e\u0627\u0645\u064e <\/strong>become \u0635\u0650\u064a\u0652\u0645\u064e<\/strong>; \u0628\u064e\u0627\u0639\u064e <\/strong>becomes \u0628\u0650\u064a\u0652\u0639\u064e<\/strong>; and \u0642\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e <\/strong>becomes \u0642\u0650\u064a\u0652\u0644\u064e<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

(3) if the regular perfective form of the verb is not tri-consonantal, and it starts with hamzat wasl<\/a><\/em>, such as \u0627\u0650\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064e\u0642\u064e\u0644\u064e<\/strong>, \u0627\u0650\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064e\u0635\u064e\u0631\u064e<\/strong>, \u0627\u0650\u0633\u0652\u062a\u064e\u062e\u0652\u0631\u064e\u062c\u064e<\/strong>, its first and third letters must be assigned DHammah<\/em>, the pre-final letter must be assigned kasrah<\/em>. Hence, \u0627\u0650\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064e\u0642\u064e\u0644\u064e <\/strong>become \u0627\u064f\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0642\u0650\u0644\u064e<\/strong>; \u0627\u0650\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064e\u0635\u064e\u0631\u064e <\/strong>become \u0627\u064f\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0635\u0650\u0631\u064e<\/strong>; and \u0627\u0650\u0633\u0652\u062a\u064e\u062e\u0652\u0631\u064e\u062c\u064e <\/strong>become \u0627\u064f\u0633\u0652\u062a\u064f\u062e\u0652\u0631\u0650\u062c\u064e<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

(4) if the regular perfective form of the verb begins with \u062a\u0640 <\/strong>that is not part of the root verb, such as \u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0645\u064e<\/strong>, \u062a\u064e\u0642\u064e\u062f\u0651\u064e\u0645\u064e<\/strong>, and \u062a\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0639\u0651\u064e\u0645\u064e<\/strong>, its first and second letters must be assigned Dhammah<\/em>, and the pre-final letter must be assigned kasrah<\/em>. Hence, \u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0645\u064e <\/strong>becomes \u062a\u064f\u0639\u064f\u0644\u0651\u0650\u0645\u064e<\/strong>; \u062a\u064e\u0642\u064e\u062f\u0651\u064e\u0645\u064e <\/strong>becomes \u062a\u064f\u0642\u064f\u062f\u0651\u0650\u0645\u064e<\/strong>; and \u062a\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0639\u0651\u064e\u0645\u064e <\/strong>becomes \u062a\u064f\u0646\u064f\u0639\u0651\u0650\u0645\u064e<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

(5) if the perfective form of the verb is irregular and is weighed as \u0641\u064e\u0627\u0639\u064e\u0644\u064e<\/strong> on the Morphological Measure, such as \u0642\u064e\u0627\u062a\u064e\u0644\u064e<\/strong>, \u062e\u064e\u0627\u0635\u064e\u0645\u064e<\/strong>, and \u0637\u064e\u0627\u0631\u064e\u062f\u064e<\/strong>, its alif<\/em> must be changed to waaw<\/em> with DHammah <\/em>assigned to the first letter, and the pre-final letter must be assigned kasrah<\/em>. Hence, \u0642\u064e\u0627\u062a\u064e\u0644\u064e <\/strong>becomes \u0642\u064f\u0648\u062a\u0650\u0644\u064e<\/strong>; \u062e\u064e\u0627\u0635\u064e\u0645\u064e <\/strong>becomes \u062e\u064f\u0648\u0652\u0635\u0650\u0645\u064e<\/strong>; and \u0637\u064e\u0627\u0631\u064e\u062f\u064e <\/strong>becomes \u0637\u064f\u0648\u0652\u0631\u0650\u062f\u064e<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Changing the imperfective form of the verb is more straightforward than the perfective form. That is,<\/p>\n
