In the previous post<\/a>, you learned about the passive voice \u0627\u0644\u0645\u064e\u0628\u0652\u0646\u0650\u064a \u0644\u0650\u0644\u0652\u0645\u064e\u062c\u0652\u0647\u064f\u0648\u0644<\/strong> in Arabic, and how an active \u0645\u064e\u0639\u0652\u0644\u064f\u0648\u0645<\/strong> sentence is changed into passive \u0645\u064e\u062c\u0652\u0647\u064f\u0648\u0644<\/strong>. Besides leaving some words out from the active sentence, verbal internal (i.e. non-final) diacritical marks or short vowels must change. This is essentially the most obvious change in verb forms. Also, with irregular Arabic verbs, weak letters (i.e. \u0627, \u0648<\/strong>, and \u064a<\/strong>) often change. In this post, you will have further practice and see more examples of how to change active sentences to passive.<\/p>\n

Perfective Passive:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In the colored table above, you can see that changing regular perfective forms of the verbs from active to passive only entails a change in the internal diacritical marks (or short vowels) of the verb. That is, while the first letter in the active verb is always accompanied by fatHah<\/em> \u0645\u064e\u0641\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0648\u062d<\/strong>, it must be accompanied by DHammah<\/em> \u0645\u064e\u0636\u0652\u0645\u064f\u0648\u0645<\/strong> in the passive. Also, the pre-final letter of the passive form must be accompanied by kasrah<\/em> \u0645\u064e\u0643\u0652\u0633\u064f\u0648\u0631<\/strong>, yet it is almost always \u0645\u064e\u0641\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0648\u062d<\/strong> in the active.<\/p>\n

In the case of irregular perfective forms, you can see that there is a weak letter in each verb, i.e. an alif<\/em>, which is never accompanied by any of the three short vowels; instead, it is always \u0633\u064e\u0627\u0643\u0650\u0646<\/strong>, that is accompanied by sukuun<\/em>. If this weak letter is pre-final, it is always changed into \u064a\u0652 <\/strong>yaa\u2019 <\/em>accompanied by sukuun<\/em> in the passive. This yaa\u2019<\/em> forces the preceding letter to be accompanied by kasrah<\/em>. If the pre-final letter in the verb is not weak, then it must be accompanied by kasrah<\/em> \u0645\u064e\u0643\u0652\u0633\u064f\u0648\u0631<\/strong>. Still, if the weak letter is the second in a four-letter verb, as in \u0639\u064e\u0627\u0647\u064e\u062f\u064e<\/strong>, it must be changed to \u0648 <\/strong>waaw<\/em> in the passive form. Essentially, this change is forced by the DHammah<\/em> on the preceding letter.<\/p>\n
