Prepositions can be a very tricky aspect of learning a foreign language. Often, we find correspondence between languages in the basic meaning and usage of certain prepositions, e.g. in Arabic (\u0641\u064a) usually translates into (in) in English and (\u0639\u0644\u0649) usually translates into (on) in English. However, this is not always the case, as there are cases where English and Arabic use different prepositions.<\/h3>\n

Prepositions<\/p><\/div>\n

In this post, I give some examples of prepositions that are harder to translate between English and Arabic.<\/h3>\n

\u0641\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0641\u0642 = on the horizon<\/h3>\n

\u064a\u0628\u062f\u0648 \u0623\u0646 \u0647\u0646\u0627\u0643 \u0623\u0645\u0644\u0627\u064b \u0641\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0641\u0642.<\/h3>\n

\u0641\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0634\u0627\u0631\u0639 = on the street<\/h3>\n

\u0628\u064a\u062a\u064a \u0641\u064a \u0634\u0627\u0631\u0639 \u0627\u0644\u0632\u0647\u0648\u0631.<\/h3>\n

\u0641\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0637\u0631\u064a\u0642 = on the way<\/h3>\n

In all of these sentences, (\u0641\u064a) in Arabic translates as (on) in English, not \u2018in\u2019 as one would expect.<\/h3>\n

Sometimes, one preposition on Arabic, e.g. (\u0641\u064a) translates into several possible prepositions in English, depending on the context, and sometimes it disappears in English,\u00a0 e.g.<\/h3>\n

\u0641\u064a \u064a\u0648\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u062c\u0645\u0639\u0629 = on Friday<\/h3>\n
