Using the lyrics of this song, we will examine some of the actual linguistic differences between Egyptian dialect and Modern Standard Arabic. The <em>fatHah <\/em>on the <strong>\u0639\u064e <\/strong>is extended that it becomes a long vowel.<\/p>\n<p>(10) Egyptian tend to shorten the <em>alif <\/em>in the middle of words that it becomes more like a <em>fatHah<\/em>, as in <strong>\u0646\u064e\u062f\u0627\u0646\u064a <\/strong>for <strong>\u0646\u064e\u0627\u062f\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064a<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Prefixes:<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(1) In <strong>\u0647\u062e\u0628\u064a <\/strong>, <strong>\u0647\u0644\u0642\u0649<\/strong> , <strong>\u0647\u062f\u064a\u0644\u0647<\/strong> , Egyptians use <strong>\u0647\u0640 <\/strong>at the beginning of verbs to indicate the future action. The equivalent of it in MSA is\u00a0<strong>\u0633\u0640<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>(2) Egyptian use <strong>\u0628\u0640 <\/strong>at the start of imperfective verbs to indicate that the action is continuous as in <strong>\u0628\u062a\u0646\u062f<\/strong><strong>\u0647<\/strong>. Here are more examples: <strong>\u0628\u0650\u064a\u0650\u0634\u0652\u0631\u064e\u0628<\/strong>, <strong>\u0628\u0650\u0646\u0650\u0644\u0652\u0639\u064e\u0628<\/strong>, <strong>\u0628\u0650\u062a\u0650\u0639\u0652\u0645\u0650\u0644<\/strong>, <strong>\u0628\u0650\u064a\u0650\u0639\u0652\u0631\u064e\u0641\u064f\u0648\u0627<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>(3) Egyptians use <strong>\u0627\u062a\u0650\u0640 <\/strong>at the beginning of verbs to indicate that the perfective verb is passive, as in <strong>\u0627\u0650\u062a\u0652\u062d\u0643\u0627\u0644\u0647 <\/strong>for <strong>\u062d\u064f\u0643\u0650\u064a\u064e <\/strong>in MSA. Here are more examples: <strong>\u0627\u0650\u062a\u0652\u0633\u064e\u0631\u0642 <\/strong>for <strong>\u0633\u064f\u0631\u0650\u0642\u064e <\/strong>\u2018was stolen\u2019, <strong>\u0627\u062a\u0652\u0642\u062a\u0644 <\/strong>for <strong>\u0642\u064f\u062a\u0650\u0644 <\/strong>\u2018was killed\u2019, <strong>\u0627\u0650\u062a\u0652\u0636\u064e\u0631\u0628 <\/strong>for <strong>\u0636\u064f\u0631\u0650\u0628\u064e <\/strong>\u2018was beaten.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Blended words:<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In both MSA and dialects, blending short words (especially preposition) with other longer words preceding them is common, as in:<\/p>\n<p>(1) <strong>\u0647\u064e\u062f\u064a\u0644\u0647 <\/strong>is <strong>\u0647\u064e\u062f\u0651\u0650\u064a \u0644\u0647<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(2) <strong>\u0642\u0644\u062a\u0644\u0647 <\/strong>is <strong>\u0642\u0644\u062a \u0644\u0647<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(3) <strong>\u0627\u062a\u062d\u0643\u0627\u0644\u0647 <\/strong>is <strong>\u0627\u062a\u062d\u0643\u0649 \u0644\u0647<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(4) <strong>\u062d\u0635\u0644\u062a\u0644\u064a <\/strong>is <strong>\u062d\u0635\u0644\u062a \u0644\u064a<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Words:<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(1) The equivalent of the MSA <strong>\u0647\u064e\u0630\u064e\u0627 <\/strong>\/ <strong>\u0630\u0627 <\/strong>and <strong>\u0647\u064e\u0630\u0650\u0647\u0650 <\/strong>\/ <strong>\u0630\u064a <\/strong>are <strong>\u062f\u064e\u0647 <\/strong>and <strong>\u062f\u0650\u064a <\/strong>in Egyptian. The <strong>\u0630 <\/strong>is pronounced as <strong>\u062f. <\/strong>The <em>alif <\/em>of <strong>\u0630\u064e\u0627 <\/strong>is dropped and is replaced by <strong>\u0647\u0640<\/strong>, which is also common in MSA known as <strong>\u0647\u0640 <\/strong>of devoicing (of <em>sukuun<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>(2) <strong>\u0627\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0644\u0650\u064a <\/strong>\u2018who\u2019 is common in most Arabic dialects. It replaces all other relative pronouns (i.e. <strong>\u0627\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0630\u0650\u064a\u060c \u0627\u0644\u0651\u064e\u062a\u0650\u064a\u060c \u0627\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0644\u0630\u064e\u0627\u0646\u060c \u0627\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0644\u062a\u064e\u0627\u0646\u060c \u0627\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0630\u0650\u064a\u0652\u0646\u060c \u0627\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0627\u062a\u0650\u064a<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>(3) <strong>\u0627\u0650\u062d\u0652\u0644\u064f\u0648 <\/strong>is for <strong>\u0627\u0650\u062d\u0652\u0644\u064e\u0648\u0652\u0644\u064e\u0649 <\/strong>in MSA. Due to its twister pronunciation, the MSA word has been replaced by <strong>\u0627\u0650\u062d\u0652\u0644\u064e\u0648 <\/strong>in most Arabic dialects.<\/p>\n<p>(4) <strong>\u00a0\u0647\u064e\u062f\u0651\u0650\u064a\u0652\u0644\u064e\u0647 <\/strong>is for <strong>\u0633\u0623\u064e\u062f\u0651\u0650\u064a \u0644\u064e\u0647 <\/strong>in MSA. The <strong>\u0647\u0640 <\/strong>is for future (see above). The <strong>\u0623 <\/strong>in <strong>\u0623\u064e\u062f\u0650\u064a <\/strong>is treated as <em>alif wasl<\/em>, so it is assimilated. <strong>\u0647\u064e\u062f\u0651\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0644\u064f\u0647<\/strong> seems as one word because of contextual blending of words.<\/p>\n<p>(5) <strong>\u064a\u064e\u0627\u0645\u064e\u0627 <\/strong>is common in Egyptian, and it means \u2018many a time\u2019<\/p>\n<p>(6) <strong>\u0628\u064e\u0633\u0652\u062a\u064e\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0649 <\/strong>is for <strong>\u0627\u0650\u0633\u0652\u062a\u0651\u064e\u0623\u064e\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0649 <\/strong>in MSA. The two <em>alif <\/em>are treated as <em>alif wasl<\/em>, so they are not pronounced. The <strong>\u0628\u064e\u0640 <\/strong>at the beginning of verbs in Egyptian indicate the action is continuous.<\/p>\n<p>(7) <strong>\u0645\u064f\u0634 <\/strong>is a common negative particle in many Arabic dialects. Its equivalent in MSA is <strong>\u0644\u064e\u0646\u0652<\/strong>. While <strong>\u0644\u0646 <\/strong>indicates negation and future, <strong>\u0645\u0634 <\/strong>indicates only negation, so the verb after <strong>\u0645\u0634 <\/strong>has the prefix <strong>\u0647\u0640 <\/strong>which indicates the future.<\/p>\n<p>(8) <strong>\u0625\u064a\u0647 <\/strong>is the Egyptian equivalent for the question word <strong>\u0645\u064e\u0627 <\/strong>in MSA, and it is always at the end of the question rather at the beginning. For example, <strong>\u0645\u064e\u0627 \u0627\u0650\u0633\u0652\u0645\u064f\u0643\u061f <\/strong>in MSA is <strong>\u0627\u0650\u0633\u0652\u0645\u064e\u0643 \u0625\u0650\u064a\u0652\u0647\u061f <\/strong>in Egyptian.<\/p>\n<p>(9) Active participles (i.e. words like <strong>\u0643\u064e\u0627\u062a\u0650\u0628 <\/strong>from <strong>\u0643\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0628\u064e<\/strong>, <strong>\u0634\u064e\u0627\u0631\u0650\u0628 <\/strong>from <strong>\u0634\u064e\u0631\u0650\u0628\u064e<\/strong>, <strong>\u0633\u064e\u0627\u0645\u0650\u0639 <\/strong>from <strong>\u0633\u064e\u0645\u0650\u0639\u064e<\/strong>) are used as verbs in Egyptian, as in <strong>\u0634\u064e\u0627\u064a\u0641\u0647 <\/strong>(i.e. <strong>\u0634\u064e\u0627\u0626\u0641 + \u0640\u0647<\/strong>). Therefore, Egyptian say <strong>\u0623\u0646\u0627 \u0633\u0627\u0645\u0639\u0647 <\/strong>for <strong>\u0633\u0645\u0639\u062a\u0647 <\/strong>\u2018I heard it \/ I listened to it\u2019; <strong>\u0623\u0646\u0627 \u062d\u0627\u0641\u0638\u0647 <\/strong>for <strong>\u062d\u0641\u0638\u062a\u0647<\/strong> \u2018I memorized it.\u2019 The same is true with <strong>\u0645\u0637\u0645\u0646\u0627\u0646\u064a <\/strong>which is used as a verb while it is an active participle (i.e. <strong>\u0645\u0637\u0645\u0626\u0646<\/strong>).
