Just got back from Jordan and Turkey where I spent the holiday with family and friends. I had just become a mother in August, and we wanted everyone to see the new grandchild<\/strong> \u062d\u0641\u064a\u062f<\/strong>. During our stay, my mother and father in law decided they wanted to perform \u201cAqiqah<\/strong>\u201d \u0639\u0642\u064a\u0642\u0629<\/strong> that is to sacrifice<\/strong> \u064a\u0636\u062d\u064a<\/strong> a sheep<\/strong> \u062e\u0631\u0648\u0641<\/strong> on behalf of the newborn<\/strong> \u0645\u0648\u0644\u0648\u062f<\/strong>. You may be familiar with the Islamic tradition of sacrificing a sheep for Eid al-Adha <\/strong>\u0639\u064a\u062f \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0636\u062d\u0649<\/strong>, but I thought to share with you another occasion<\/strong> \u0645\u0646\u0627\u0633\u0628\u0629<\/strong> where a sheep is sacrificed.<\/p>\n

Aqiqah<\/strong>, an Islamic terminology, is defined as the animal (most commonly a sheep) that is slaughtered on the occasion of a child\u2019s birth as a means of expressing gratitude<\/strong> \u0634\u064f\u0643\u0631<\/strong> to God for the blessing<\/strong> \u0646\u0639\u0645\u0629<\/strong> of having that child. In Islam, it is not obligatory<\/strong> \u0625\u0644\u0632\u0627\u0645\u064a<\/strong> but encouraged<\/strong> \u064a\u064f\u0634\u062c\u0639<\/strong> if one is able to do so.<\/p>\n

Aqiqah\u00a0resembles<\/strong> \u064a\u0634\u0628\u0647<\/strong> the sacrifice made when God ransomed the Prophet Ismael and ordered the sacrificing of a sheep instead. Performing Aqiqah goes all the way back to the time of the prophet Muhammad. Both then and now, the birth of a child is a cause for great celebration and what better way to celebrate than over a big lamb dinner with family and friends! It is also a cause to distribute<\/strong> \u064a\u0648\u0632\u0639<\/strong> meat to the poor<\/strong> \u0641\u0642\u0631\u0627\u0621<\/strong> and needy <\/strong>\u0627\u0644\u0645\u062d\u062a\u0627\u062c\u064a\u0646<\/strong>, including orphans<\/strong> \u0623\u064a\u062a\u0627\u0645<\/strong> and the elderly<\/strong> \u0645\u0633\u0646\u064a\u0646<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Who knows, one day you could be invited to a lamb dinner and find out its on behalf of a newborn baby!<\/p>\n
