Part one"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Learning Arabic plurals is not easy, I\u2019ll admit, but&#8230; we cannot forget <strong>the dual form in Arabic <\/strong><strong>\u0627\u0644\u0652\u0645\u064f\u062b\u064e\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0649<\/strong> which is a separate form for talking about <u>two<\/u> <span style=\"color: #008000\">people<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">things<\/span>, or <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">actions<\/span>. It\u2019s important to know how to use the dual in Arabic because we cannot simply use the plural form instead. The dual form can be used for nouns, pronouns, adjectives and verbs. In this post, we\u2019ll focus on nouns and pronouns.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s pretend you went to a library and you wanted to borrow two books, how would you say, \u201ctwo books\u201d? Would you say <strong>\u0625\u062b\u0646\u064a\u0646\/\u0625\u062b\u0646\u0627\u0646 \u0643\u0650\u062a\u0627\u0628<\/strong> or <strong>\u0625\u062b\u0646\u064a\u0646\/\u0625\u062b\u0646\u0627\u0646 \u0643\u064f\u062a\u0628<\/strong>? (notice how \u201c\u0647\u0630\u0627\u201d can also be in the dual form)<\/p>\n<p>And <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>(ayn) <\/strong><strong>\u064a\u064e\u0646<\/strong> <\/span>used for the genitive case (after prepositions), and accusative case (for the object of a verb),<\/p>\n<p>e.g.: .<strong>\u0623\u0646\u064e\u0627 \u0623\u0642\u0631\u064e\u0623\u064f \u0643\u0650\u062a\u064e\u0627\u0628\u064a\u0652\u0646<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>I am reading two books.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If the noun is <strong>feminine<\/strong> ending with a <span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>\u0629<\/strong><\/span>, then we first change the<span style=\"color: #ff6600\"> <strong>\u0629<\/strong><\/span> to a <span style=\"color: #800000\"><strong>\u062a<\/strong> <\/span>then add either <strong>\u0627\u0646<\/strong> or <strong>\u064a\u064e\u0646<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>e.g.: <strong>\u0634\u064e\u062c\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0629\u064c<\/strong> tree becomes <strong>\u0634\u064e\u062c\u064e\u0631\u064e\u062a\u0627\u0646\u0650<\/strong> or <strong>\u0634\u064e\u062c\u064e\u0631\u064e\u062a\u064e\u064a\u0646\u0650<\/strong> two trees<\/p>\n<p><strong>.\u0627\u0644\u0634\u062c\u0631\u062a\u0627\u0646 \u0643\u0628\u064a\u0631\u062a\u0627\u0646<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 The two trees are big.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Pronouns<\/u>: We can only apply the dual to <u>two pronouns<\/u>: \u201cyou plural\u201d <strong>\u0623\u0646\u062a\u064f\u0645<\/strong>, and \u201cthey\u201d <strong>\u0647\u064f\u0645<\/strong>. By adding an \u201calif\u201d to the end you get the dual form.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0623\u0646\u062a\u064f\u0645<\/strong> becomes <strong>\u0623\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0645\u0627<\/strong> (used for both genders) e.g.: .<strong>\u0623\u0646\u062a\u0645\u0627 \u062a\u0639\u0628\u0627\u0646\u0627\u0646<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>You two are tired.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0647\u064f\u0645<\/strong> becomes <strong>\u0647\u064f\u0645\u0627<\/strong> (used for both genders) \u00a0e.g.: .<strong>\u0647\u0645\u0627 \u0645\u0634\u0647\u0648\u0631\u0627\u0646<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 They (two) are famous.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll talk more about the dual form for adjectives and verbs in the next post.<\/p>\n<p>How often have you come across dual forms in your Arabic studies?
