Valentine\u2019s day<\/strong> \u0639\u064a\u062f<\/strong> \u0627\u0644\u062d\u064f\u0628 <\/strong><\/span>\u00a0or <\/strong>\u0639\u064a\u062f<\/span> \u0627\u0644\u0641\u0627\u0644\u0646\u062a\u0627\u064a\u0646<\/span><\/strong> is right around the corner. Like many in Amman, Jordan, I grew up watching American movies showing couples having dinner at a fancy <\/strong>\u0641\u0627\u062e\u0631<\/strong> restaurant and exchanging gifts on Valentine\u2019s Day. To many, it is viewed as a Western celebration. Still, in Jordan, as well as other Arab countries such as Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria, Valentine\u2019s Day is celebrated publicly<\/strong> \u0639\u0644\u0646\u0627\u064b<\/strong>. Yet, there are also people in these countries who frown upon<\/strong> \u064a\u0639\u062a\u0631\u0636 \u0639\u0644\u0649 <\/strong>this public celebration of love. It is thought by some to be\u00a0contradictory<\/strong> \u0645\u0646\u0627\u0642\u0636<\/strong> to conservative<\/strong> \u0645\u062d\u0627\u0641\u0638<\/strong> culture and teachings. While most celebrate it all throughout these countries, few remain against it.<\/p>\n

Right now, in Arab countries, you can find shops filled with roses and red teddy bears all along the streets. Restaurants begin advertising special multi-course meals a week in advance. Roses are even sold to cars at the traffic lights.<\/p>\n

How about this year, to show your Arabic language skills, you write a card to someone you love in Arabic!<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
