Have you ever thought of switching your phone or computer to Arabic? Try it for a day and see what terms you understand such as \u201cusername\u201d, \u201csave\u201d, \u201cdelete\u201d, etc. In this post, we\u2019ll be looking at technology vocab in Arabic. Keep in mind, some terms are the same used in English. You\u2019ll also find that in colloquial Arabic, you\u2019ll hear a lot more of the English terms being used rather than the formal standard Arabic terms. We\u2019ll also talk about Arabizi, what that is, and how it is used in modern day chatting on social media.<\/p>\n

Technology Terms in Arabic<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s begin with computer related terms: Computer<\/strong> in Modern Standard Arabic is \u062d\u0627\u0633\u0648\u0628<\/strong>. Which you will find being used in textbooks, but in everyday Arabic, we say \u0643\u0648\u0645\u0628\u064a\u0648\u062a\u0631<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Same thing with laptop, keyboard, and mouse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The official meanings are \u062d\u0627\u0633\u0648\u0628 \u0645\u062d\u0645\u0648\u0644<\/strong>, <\/strong>\u0644\u0648\u062d\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0641\u0627\u062a\u064a\u062d<\/strong>, <\/strong>\u0641\u0623\u0631\u0629<\/strong> yet we say \u0644\u0627\u0628 \u062a\u0648\u0628<\/strong>, <\/strong>\u0643\u064a \u0628\u0648\u0631\u062f<\/strong>, <\/strong>\u0645\u0627\u0648\u0633<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Arabizi<\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you happen to have Arabic speaking friends on social media, you may have noticed them using letters as well as numbers to make words. For example, \u201cmar7aba\u201d instead of \u201c\u0645\u0631\u062d\u0628\u0627<\/strong>\u201d or kul 3am wa inta bi5air\u201d instead of \u201c\u0643\u0644 \u0639\u0627\u0645 \u0648\u0623\u0646\u062a \u0628\u062e\u064a\u0631<\/strong>\u201d. Notice the numbers 7,3, and 5. These numbers are used for Arabic sounds that do not exist in English. (See below).\u00a0This new system of writing is called \u201cArabizi\u201d hence, Arabic language using English (\u0625\u0646\u062c\u0644\u064a\u0632\u064a<\/strong>) letters. It began with text messages when more people started having cell phones. The younger generation did not like switching to the Arabic keyboard. It was easier to type using the English keyboard, yet it was easier to use numbers for the Arabic specific sounds. Why use \u201ckh\u201d for \u062e<\/strong> when you could just use 5. Or capitalize an \u201ch\u201d for \u062d<\/strong> or capitalize a \u201ct\u201d for \u0637<\/strong> when you could use the number 6. Note that you\u2019ll find most Arabizi in Arabic dialects since the language of chatting is in dialect.<\/p>\n
