I think when Arabic breakfast comes to mind, some may think only of hummus and falafel. But, an Arabic breakfast spread has so much more variety. In this post we\u2019ll be learning about some common Arabic breakfast foods and talk a bit about how it is served and eaten. We\u2019ll also learn different ways to say \u201cdelicious\u201d and the meaning of <strong>\u0635\u064e\u062d\u062a\u064e\u064a\u0646<\/strong> which you will definitely here when having a meal with Arabic speakers, and how it is used.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Here are some common Arabic breakfast foods:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>lebeneh \u0644\u064e\u0628\u0646\u0629<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(A soft cheese, similar in texture to cream cheese, made from strained yogurt.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>zaatar \u0632\u064e\u0639\u062a\u064e\u0631<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(thyme mixed with spices eaten with bread and olive oil)<\/p>\n<p><strong>jams<\/strong>\u00a0 <strong>\u0645\u064f\u0631\u0628\u0649<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Many Arabs are proud of the different types of jams they make at home, such as apricot jam, strawberry jam, and raspberry jam.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>honey<\/strong> <strong>\u0639\u064e\u0633\u0644<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Honey is eaten with bread and also drizzled in tea or hot water.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>halowah<\/strong>\u00a0 <strong>\u062d\u0644\u0627\u0648\u0629<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Halawa is made from sesame paste, nuts, butter and sugar.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>olives and pickles<\/strong> <strong>\u0632\u064a\u062a\u0648\u0646 \u0648\u0645\u062e\u0644\u0644<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Sometimes store bought and sometimes homemade.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>eggs<\/strong> <strong>\u0628\u064e\u064a\u0636<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>sliced vegetables and fruit \u062e\u064f\u0636\u0627\u0631 \u0648\u0641\u064e\u0648\u0627\u0643\u0650\u0647 \u0645\u064f\u0642\u064e\u0637\u0639\u0629<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>haloum cheese<\/strong> \u00a0<strong>\u062c\u0628\u0646\u0629 \u062d\u064e\u0644\u0648\u0645<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>hummus, foul, falafel<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>\u062d\u064f\u0645\u0635\u060c \u0641\u0648\u0644\u060c \u0641\u0644\u0627\u0641\u0650\u0644<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Not always part of breakfast.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>manakish<\/strong> <strong>\u0645\u0646\u0627\u0642\u064a\u0634<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Manakish is a popular Levantine food consisting of dough topped with thyme, cheese, or ground meat.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>tea<\/strong> <strong>\u0634\u0627\u064a<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Can&#8217;t have breakfast without tea. Fresh bread and hot tea are served, and everyone takes a little from every dish either with a little spoon or by scooping up with a piece of bread. Some main breakfast foods include \u201c<strong>manakish<\/strong>\u201d <strong>\u0645\u0646\u0627\u0642\u064a\u0634<\/strong> which is a popular Levantine food consisting of baked dough topped with thyme, cheese, or ground meat. Another popular breakfast food is \u201c<strong>zaatar<\/strong>\u201d <strong>\u0632\u0639\u062a\u0631<\/strong> which is actually thyme mixed with spices. Bread is dipped in olive oil then into the zaatar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: Try not to double dip your bread into a shared dish. Some people don\u2019t mind, but some do. You could always scoop some dip into your own personal dish too. ?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Here are a few ways to say something is yummy or delicious in Arabic.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>MSA: <strong>\u0644\u064e\u064e\u0630\u064a\u0630<\/strong> or <strong>\u0634\u064e\u0647\u064a<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lebanese and Syrian dialect: <strong>\u0637\u064e\u064a\u0651\u0650\u0628<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jordanian and Palestinian dialect: <strong>\u0632\u0627\u0643\u064a<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What does \u0635\u064e\u062d\u062a\u064e\u064a\u0646 mean and how to reply?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Once your finished eating, or sometimes while you&#8217;re eating, the person who prepared the food or the host will say \u201c<strong>\u0635\u064e\u062d\u062a\u064e\u064a\u0646<\/strong>\u201d. There is no exact equivalent to this phrase in English. The closest equivalent is the French phrase Bon app\u00e9tit which is also used in English. <strong>\u0635\u064e\u062d\u062a\u064e\u064a\u0646<\/strong> is derived from the word <strong>\u0635\u062d\u0629<\/strong> meaning \u201chealth\u201d. Do you recall the dual form in Arabic? <strong>\u0635\u064e\u062d\u062a\u064e\u064a\u0646<\/strong> is the dual form of <strong>\u0635\u062d\u0629<\/strong> meaning &#8220;health&#8221; making it \u201ctwo healths\u201d. Arabic speakers sometimes like to use the dual form for emphasis. Another example is using the dual form of \u201chello\u201d <strong>\u0645\u0631\u062d\u0628\u0627<\/strong>. Someone says <strong>\u0645\u0631\u062d\u0628\u0627<\/strong>, the other replies <strong>\u0645\u064e\u0631\u062d\u0628\u062a\u064e\u064a\u0646<\/strong> \u201ctwo hellos\u201d. So, by wishing someone eating <strong>\u0635\u064e\u062d\u062a\u064e\u064a\u0646<\/strong>, you are exaggerating your wishes of good health.<\/p>\n<p>The appropriate reply to <strong>\u0635\u064e\u062d\u062a\u064e\u064a\u0646<\/strong> is <strong>\u0639\u0644\u0649 \u0642\u064e\u0644\u0628\u064e\u0643<\/strong> meaning \u201chealth to your heart\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have you tried a Meza breakfast before?
