Since food is a popular topic<\/strong> \u0645\u0648\u0636\u0648\u0639<\/strong> \u0634\u0627\u0626\u0639<\/strong> in this month, I decided to share with you some thoughts about the way food is perceived<\/strong> \u064a\u064f\u0646\u0638\u064e\u0631 \u0644\u0647\u00a0 in the Arab world\u00a0<\/em> \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0627\u0644\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0631\u0628\u064a<\/strong> and the<\/strong> rituals \u0627\u0644\u0637\u0642\u0648\u0633<\/strong> \u00a0around it. In this post, we are going to learn some of the common phrases and sentences that Arabs say or use when food is served, whether they were the ones serving it, i.e. the host \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0636\u064a\u0641<\/strong> \u00a0or the ones to which food is served, i.e. the guest \u0627\u0644\u0636\u064a\u0641<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you are invited to eat at an Arab\u2019s place, it\u2019s worth familiarising yourself with what you will most likely to hear by your host. It\u2019s also a good idea – as a guest – to know what to say on such an occasion and how to reply to your host\u2019s greetings and wishes when food is around.<\/p>\n

The phrases and sentences we\u2019re going to learn are mainly related to the idea of health \u0627\u0644\u0635\u062d\u0629<\/strong> \u00a0and this is because food is strongly viewed as a way to nourish<\/strong> \u064a\u063a\u0630\u0651\u064a<\/strong> oneself and not just to fill one\u2019s stomach.<\/p>\n

-The two main words that tend to be used when someone wishes you well while you\u2019re eating are:<\/p>\n

SiHHa \u0635\u062d\u0629<\/strong><\/p>\n

Which means \u201chealth\u201d.<\/p>\n

or:<\/p>\n

\u0295afiyah \u0639\u0627\u0641\u064a\u0629<\/strong><\/p>\n

Which also means \u201chealth\u201d or \u201cgood health\u201d.<\/p>\n

-There is another word that you may also hear a lot, although not as frequently as the previous two, is:<\/p>\n

Salaamah \u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645\u0647<\/strong><\/p>\n

It generally means “safety” or “protection”.<\/p>\n

*Popular phrases (by host) and replies (by guest):<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u0661. \u0635\u062d\u0629<\/strong><\/p>\n

SaHHA<\/strong><\/p>\n

This phrase is the most common and is found in very much all the Arabic dialects. The host would typically say it after the guest had started eating, and it basically means Bon App\u00e9tit or \u201cMay this bring health to you\u201d.<\/p>\n

To add some emphasis to the meaning, some say \u0635\u062d\u062a\u064a\u0646 \u00a0SaHte:n<\/strong> (two healths!).<\/p>\n

>><\/strong>A typical reply<\/u> is: \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647<\/strong> \u064a\u0633\u0644\u0645\u0643<\/strong> \u00a0Allh y-salm-i(a)k (May Allah protect you\/ keep you safe).<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u0662. \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0635\u062d\u0629 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0639\u0627\u0641\u064a\u0629<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bi-SiHHA\u00a0 wa al-\u0295aafya<\/strong><\/p>\n

>><\/strong>A typical reply<\/u> would be: \u0634\u0643\u0631\u064b\u0627<\/strong> \u00a0Shukr-an (Thank you).<\/p>\n

\u0663. \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0647\u0646\u0627\u0621 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0634\u0641\u0627\u0621<\/b><\/p>\n

Bil-hanaa2\u00a0 wa \u00a0a\u0161-\u0161ifaa2<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>This standard Arabic phrase literally means \u201cwith bliss and healing\u201d. A modified version of it \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0647\u0646\u0627 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0634\u0641\u0627 <\/strong>bil-hana\u00a0 we\u00a0 e\u0161-\u0161ifa\u00a0 is very popular in Egypt.<\/p>\n

>><\/strong>A typical reply<\/u> would be: \u062a\u0633\u0644\u0645<\/strong>\/\u062a\u0633\u0644\u0645\u064a <\/strong>\u00a0Tislam\/Tislam-i (May you are protect\/be safe).<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u0664. \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0643 \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0639\u0627\u0641\u064a\u0629<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0ale:k\u00a0 bil-\u0295aafyah<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>This phrase – literally means \u201chealth on you\u201d \u2013 is what people in the Gulf region often use.<\/p>\n

><\/strong>A typical reply<\/u> would be: \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u064a\u0639\u0627\u0641\u064a\u0643 <\/strong>\u00a0Allah\u00a0 y-\u0295aafee-k (May Allah keep you healthy\/ in good health).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

*Popular phrases (by guest) and replies (by host):<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u0661. \u064a\u0633\u0644\u0645\u0648 \u0625\u064a\u062f\u064a\u0643\u0650<\/b><\/p>\n

y-islamu\u00a0 eede:-k-i<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This phrase (in the Levantine dialect) means: (May your hands be protected).<\/p>\n

>><\/strong>A typical reply<\/u> is: \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647<\/strong> \u064a\u0633\u0644\u0645\u0643<\/strong> \u00a0Allh y-salm-ik (May Allah protect you\/ keep you safe).<\/p>\n

\u0662. \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u064a\u0633\u0644\u0651\u0645 \u0647\u0627\u0644\u0625\u064a\u062f\u064a\u0646<\/b><\/p>\n

Allah\u00a0 \u00a0y-sallem \u00a0\u00a0hal-eede:n<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is a modified version of the previous phrase and it means (May Allah protect these hands).<\/p>\n

The reply<\/u> to the previous phrase can be used here. However, in the Libyan dialect, e.g. the reply<\/u> is slightly longer>><\/strong> \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647<\/strong> \u064a\u0633\u0644\u0645\u0643 \u0648\u064a\u0639\u0637\u064a\u0643 \u0627\u0644\u0635\u062d\u0629<\/strong> \u00a0Allah y-salm-ik \u00a0w\u00a0 y-a\u0295Tee-k\u00a0 eS-SaHHa (May Allah protect you and give you health).<\/p>\n

*Finally, if the guest looks overwhelmed or embarrassed by how much food he\/she is served and repeatedly shows his\/her gratitude, the host would usually say:<\/p>\n

\u0647\u0627\u062f\u0627 \u0648\u0627\u062c\u0628\u0646\u0627<\/strong><\/p>\n

Haada\u00a0 waajib-na<\/p>\n

(This is our duty)<\/p>\n
