A few months ago, we learnt some of the popular Italian words<\/em><\/a> that were adopted from the Italian language and integrated into the Libyan dialect. In today\u2019s post, we\u2019re going to look at words that are of<\/strong> Turkish origin \u062a\u0631\u0643\u064a\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0635\u0644 <\/strong>\u2013 another popular group of words that one can hear used in an everyday setting in Libya.<\/p>\n

*This can be a good resource to our Turkish speaking readers – it\u2019s always good to realise you already know more words in a language than you thought you did \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

Alongside Italian, Libyan Arabic is also quite influenced by the Turkish language \u2013 although its influences isn\u2019t as great as that of the Italian – and this is obvious in the large number of everyday words that are originally Turkish. The reason for this is most likely to be related to the Ottoman<\/strong> conquest \u0627\u0644\u063a\u0632\u0648 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u062b\u0645\u0627\u0646\u064a <\/strong>as Ottomans<\/strong> ruled<\/strong> \u062d\u064a\u062b \u062d\u0643\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u062b\u0645\u0627\u0646\u064a\u0648\u0646<\/strong> \u00a0the<\/strong> Middle<\/strong> East\u0627\u0644\u0634\u0631\u0642 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0648\u0633\u0637 <\/strong>\u00a0and North<\/strong> Africa<\/strong> \u0634\u0645\u0627\u0644<\/strong> \u0625\u0641\u0631\u064a\u0642\u064a\u0627<\/strong> for more than 600 years, before WWI \u0627\u0644\u062d\u0631\u0628 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0627\u0644\u0645\u064a\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0648\u0644\u0649 <\/strong>(at least 300 years in the coastal area \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0646\u0627\u0637\u0642 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0627\u062d\u0644\u064a\u0629<\/strong> of Tripoli-Libya, in particular).<\/p>\n

The words we’re going to look at are divided into 5 main categories<\/u>: the house \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0646\u0632\u0644, the kitchen \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0637\u0628\u062e, food \u0627\u0644\u0637\u0639\u0627\u0645, clothes \u0645\u0644\u0627\u0628\u0633 & general\/mix \u0639\u0627\u0645.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong><\/em> Many of these words are not unique to Libyan Arabic, but can be found and are used in other Arab countries, especially the Levant.<\/p>\n
