I thought this week, we could look at some \u0634\u0650\u0639\u0652\u0631 \u0639\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0628\u064a<\/strong> Arabic poetry<\/strong> by the well- known Palestinian national poet \u0645\u062d\u0645\u0648\u062f \u062f\u0631\u0648\u064a\u0634<\/strong> Mahmoud Darwish<\/strong>. When learning a foreign language, it can seem overwhelming to dive into poetry or literature in that language. Yet, even if we do not understand each and every word of let\u2019s say a poem, we can try listening to the poem and practice reading it ourselves to experience some of its \u062c\u064e\u0645\u0627\u0644<\/strong> beauty<\/strong>. If we happen to come across a translation of a poem, despite that translations can rarely ever capture the true \u062c\u064e\u0648\u0647\u064e\u0631<\/strong> essence<\/strong> and \u0625\u064a\u0642\u0627\u0639<\/strong> rhythm<\/strong> of the original poem, it at least helps us understand the gist and meaning behind its writing. Try not to let any difficulty you may be facing in learning Arabic keep you from reading and listening to Arabic poetry. It opens up a whole new realm in your Arabic language learning experience.<\/p>\n

Before looking at the poem, could you understand the title? What do you think it could be about? A central theme in Darwish’s poetry is the concept of \u0627\u0644\u0648\u064e\u0637\u064e\u0646\u064f<\/strong> or homeland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Of grass, a moon at word’s end, a supply<\/p>\n

Of birds, and an olive tree that cannot die.<\/p>\n

I walked and crossed the land before the crossing<\/p>\n
