Over the weekend, I decided to make my own \u062d\u064f\u0645\u064f\u0651\u0635<\/strong> hummus<\/strong> since it\u2019s very easy to make and because no matter how hard I search here in American supermarkets, I can never find one that tastes close to home. Then I began thinking about the \u0623\u0635\u0652\u0644<\/strong> origin<\/strong> of hummus and why people love this simple spread so much. So, I did a little \u0628\u064e\u062d\u0652\u062b<\/strong> research<\/strong> and thought to share with you in this post what I learned along with a couple hummus \u0648\u064e\u0635\u0652\u0641\u0627\u062a<\/strong> recipes<\/strong> in Arabic.<\/p>\n

Where did hummus originate?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>\u0645\u0650\u0646 \u0623\u064a\u0646\u064e \u0646\u064e\u0634\u0623 \u0627\u0644\u062d\u064f\u0645\u0651\u064f\u0635<\/strong>\u061f<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Turns out \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0631\u0628<\/strong> Arabs<\/strong>, \u0627\u0644\u0625\u0633\u0631\u0627\u0626\u064a\u0644\u064a\u064a\u0646<\/strong> Israelis<\/strong>, \u0627\u0644\u0623\u062a\u0631\u0627\u0643<\/strong> Turks<\/strong>, and \u0627\u0644\u064a\u0648\u0646\u0627\u0646\u064a\u0648\u0646<\/strong> Greeks<\/strong> all like to \u064a\u064e\u062f\u0651\u064e\u0639\u064a<\/strong> claim<\/strong> that they first created hummus. No one can say for sure where it truly comes from, but the earliest mention of this spread dates back to 13th<\/sup> century Egypt. Chickpeas were and are \u0648\u064e\u0641\u064a\u0631<\/strong> abundant<\/strong> in the Middle East and are still commonly eaten. In fact, the Arabic word for chickpea<\/strong> is “\u062d\u064f\u0645\u064f\u0651\u0635”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The basic hummus recipe.\u00a0 \u00a0.\u0648\u064e\u0635\u0641\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u062d\u064f\u0645\u064f\u0635 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0633\u0627\u0633\u064a\u0629<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Hummus is almost always made by combining \u0627\u0644\u062d\u064f\u0645\u0651\u064f\u0635 <\/strong>chickpeas<\/strong>, \u0637\u064e\u062d\u064a\u0646\u0629<\/strong> sesame<\/strong> paste<\/strong>, \u0639\u064e\u0635\u064a\u0631<\/strong> \u0644\u064e\u064a\u0645\u0648\u0646<\/strong> lemon<\/strong> juice<\/strong> and \u0645\u064e\u0644\u0652\u062d<\/strong> salt<\/strong>. Some like to add \u062b\u0648\u0645<\/strong> garlic<\/strong> in the mix or mix it in after. I personally don\u2019t add anything but salt and sprinkle \u0643\u064e\u0645\u0648\u0646<\/strong> cumin<\/strong> and \u0633\u064f\u0645\u0627\u0642<\/strong> sumac<\/strong> once it\u2019s on a plate. Of course, a good drizzle of \u0632\u064e\u064a\u062a<\/strong> \u0627\u0644\u0632\u064e\u064a\u062a\u0648\u0646<\/strong> olive<\/strong> oil<\/strong> is a must. You’ll find that across the Middle East, there are numerous \u0625\u062e\u062a\u0644\u0627\u0641\u0627\u062a<\/strong> variations<\/strong> of what to add to a plate of \u062d\u064f\u0645\u064f\u0651\u0635<\/strong> and how to \u062a\u0632\u064a\u064a\u0646<\/strong> garnish<\/strong> the plate. Of course restaurants \u064a\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0646\u0627\u0641\u064e\u0633\u00a0compete<\/strong> to make the best plate of \u062d\u064f\u0645\u064f\u0651\u0635<\/strong>\u00a0 and try to make theirs \u0645\u064f\u062a\u064e\u0645\u064e\u064a\u0651\u0650\u0632<\/strong> unique<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Is hummus healthy?<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u0647\u064e\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u062d\u064f\u0645\u0651\u064f\u0635 <\/strong>\u0635\u062d\u064a\u061f<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Hummus is high in \u0623\u0644\u064a\u0627\u0641<\/strong> fiber<\/strong> and \u0628\u0631\u0648\u062a\u064a\u0646<\/strong> protein<\/strong> and makes you feel \u0634\u064e\u0628\u0652\u0639\u0627\u0646<\/strong> full<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
