The middle portion is Demotic <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u0627\u0644\u0644\u063a\u0629<\/strong> <strong>\u0627\u0644\u062f\u064a\u0645\u0648\u0637\u064a\u0642\u064a\u0629<\/strong><\/span> and the lower is ancient Greek <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u0627\u0644\u0644\u063a\u0629<\/strong> <strong>\u0627\u0644\u064a\u0648\u0646\u0627\u0646\u064a\u0629<\/strong><\/span> . It was rediscovered there in July, 1799 by a soldier of the French Expedition <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u0627\u0644\u062d\u0645\u0644\u0629<\/strong> <strong>\u0627\u0644\u0641\u0631\u0646\u0633\u064a\u0629<\/strong><\/span> toEgypt. As the first bilingual text recovered in modern times, the Rosetta Stone aroused widespread interest with its potential to decipher the ancient Egyptian language that was dead at that time. Lithographic copies and plaster casts began circulating amongst European museums and scholars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The British troops defeated the French in Egyptin 1801 during the Napoleonic Wars <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u062d\u0631\u0648\u0628<\/strong> <strong>\u0646\u0627\u0628\u0644\u064a\u0648\u0646<\/strong><\/span> and the original stone came into British possession after the capitulation <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u0627\u0633\u062a\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645<\/strong><\/span> of Alexandria. Transported to London, the stone has been on public display at the British Museum <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u0627\u0644\u0645\u062a\u062d\u0641<\/strong> <strong>\u0627\u0644\u0628\u0631\u064a\u0637\u0627\u0646\u064a<\/strong><\/span> since 1802. It is the most-visited object in theBritishMuseum. Since 2003, there have been unsuccessful demands for the stone&#8217;s return toEgypt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Study of the decree <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u0627\u0644\u0641\u0631\u0645\u0627\u0646<\/strong><\/span> was already under way as the first full translation <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u062a\u0631\u062c\u0645\u0629<\/strong><\/span> of the Greek text appeared in 1803. However, it was 20 years before the decipherment of the Egyptian text was announced by Jean-Francois Champollion <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u062c\u0627\u0646 \u0641\u0631\u0627\u0646\u0633\u0648\u0627 \u0634\u0627\u0645\u0628\u0644\u064a\u0648\u0646<\/strong><\/span> inParis in 1822. Still, it took longer before scholars were able to read other ancient Egyptian inscriptions and literature confidently. Major advances were: recognition that the stone offered three versions of the same text (1799); that the demotic text used phonetic characters to spell foreign names (1802); that the hieroglyphic text did so as well and had pervasive similarities to the demotic (Thomas Young, 1814); and that in addition to being used for foreign names, phonetic characters were also used to spell native Egyptian words (Champollion, 1822-1824).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Two other fragmentary copies of the same decree were discovered later, and several similar Egyptian bilingual or trilingual inscriptions are now known, including two slightly earlier <a title=\"Ptolemaic Decrees\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ptolemaic_Decrees\">Ptolemaic decrees<\/a> (the <a title=\"Decree of Canopus\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Decree_of_Canopus\">Decree of Canopus<\/a> in 238 BC, and the <a title=\"Decree of Memphis (Ptolemy IV)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Decree_of_Memphis_(Ptolemy_IV)\">Memphis decree of Ptolemy\u00a0IV<\/a>, ca. 218 BC).
