One of the tricky aspects of learning most languages is colloquial expressions, which make an important part of the spoken dialect\/variety of a language. Unless the learner is exposed to them, they are almost impossible to come up with them. In today\u2019s post (and the next one), we\u2019re going to look at sixteen popular English colloquial phrases and the Arabic equivalent to them. You will also be able to hear me say each one of them and how each is pronounced.<\/p>\n

So, what are colloquial phrases?<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Colloquial phrases or \u0639\u0628\u0627\u0631\u0627\u062a \u0639\u0627\u0645\u064a\u0629<\/strong> \u00a0are part of the informal register \u0637\u0631\u064a\u0642\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u062d\u062f\u064a\u062b \u063a\u064a\u0631 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u0633\u0645\u064a\u0629<\/strong> of a language or dialect. They are usually hard to translate because their intended meaning \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0639\u0646\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u064f\u0631\u0627\u062f can\u2019t be figured out from the literal meaning of each word. The meaning is usually idiomatic \u0627\u0635\u0637\u0644\u0627\u062d\u064a<\/strong> \u00a0or metaphorical \u0645\u062c\u0627\u0632\u064a<\/strong> .<\/p>\n

Below, you will find a list of English colloquial phrases and their equivalent in Standard Arabic<\/strong> and Spoken Arabic<\/strong> (Levantine\/Syrian Arabic \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647\u062c\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0648\u0631\u064a\u0629 is mostly used), alongside the literal meaning \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0639\u0646\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u062d\u0631\u0641\u064a<\/strong> of the Arabic one (if it is translatable and if it\u2019s different from the English one).<\/p>\n

The other dialects mentioned are: Libyan Arabic \u0627\u0644\u0644\u064a\u0628\u064a\u0629, Egyptian Arabic \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0635\u0631\u064a\u0629 <\/strong>& Saudi Arabic \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0639\u0648\u062f\u064a\u0629.<\/strong><\/p>\n

*For some phrases, there is one common phrase that is used in most Arabic dialects. Thus, here, I will add \u0623\u063a\u0644\u0628<\/strong> \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647\u062c\u0627\u062a <\/strong>\u00a0\u201cmost dialects\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 before the Arabic phrase.<\/p>\n
