In today\u2019s post, I would like to focus on the concept of dignity<\/strong> \u0627\u0644\u0643\u0631\u0627\u0645\u0629<\/strong> in Arabic and how it\u2019s talked about in the Arabic-speaking world. This 3-part post will look at a number of proverbs and everyday expressions\/phrases that are used in spoken Arabic. In the first two parts, the focus will be several proverbs in different Arabic dialects. The final part will focus on common phrases as featured in a song.<\/p>\n

How is “Karaamah” \u201cdignity\u201d is perceived in Arabic?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

As in most cultures and languages, dignity is associated with one\u2019s self-image\u00a0 <\/strong>\u0627\u0644\u0635\u0648\u0631\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0630\u0627\u062a\u064a\u0629 \u0644\u0644\u0634\u062e\u0635<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Saving face and keeping one\u2019s dignity can be a very serious issue when personal relationships are involved, whether it was romantic or not.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

*To save one\u2019s face<\/em> – in Arabic is> \u064a\u062d\u0641\u0638 \u0645\u0627\u0621 \u0648\u062c\u0647\u0647 <\/strong>which literally translate to: \u201cto keep his face\u2019s water<\/strong>\u201d!<\/p>\n

*To keep one\u2019s dignity – <\/em>\u00a0in Arabic is> \u064a\u062d\u0627\u0641\u0638 \u0639\u0644\u0649 \u0643\u0631\u0627\u0645\u062a\u0647 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Yu-HaafiZ\u00a0 \u0295ala\u00a0 Karaama-t-ih<\/p>\n

*However, to lose one\u2019s dignity<\/em> – in Arabic is> \u064a\u062e\u0633\u0631 \u0643\u0631\u0627\u0645\u062a\u0647<\/strong> \u00a0Yaxsar\u00a0\u00a0 Karaama-t-ih<\/p>\n

Before we look at 4 specific proverbs, there is a concept that\u2019s related to that of dignity, which is<\/p>\n

> buying<\/strong> \u0627\u0644\u0628\u064a\u0639<\/strong> \u00a0and selling<\/strong> \u0627\u0644\u0634\u0631\u0627\u0621<\/strong>!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In Arabic:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

*When someone leaves or ditches you<\/em>, it\u2019s said that this person \u201csold you\u201d\u00a0\u0628\u064e\u0627\u0639\u064e\u0643\u0652<\/strong> or he\u2019s a \u201cseller\u201d \u0628\u064e\u0627\u064a\u0650\u0639\u0652<\/strong><\/p>\n

*When someone is keen to keep you in his life<\/em>, it\u2019s said that this person \u201cbought you\u201d \u0634\u064e\u0631\u0627\u0643<\/strong> or he\u2019s a \u201cbuyer\u201d \u0634\u0627\u0631\u064a<\/strong><\/p>\n

This idea of buying and selling is apparent in the first proverb we have. Although it\u2019s used in many Arab\u00a0countries, the one I provide here is in Egyptian Arabic. It goes as follows >><\/em><\/p>\n

Literal meaning:<\/u><\/strong> That who sold you for (flava) beans, sell him for its peels<\/p>\n

Intended meaning:<\/u><\/strong> If someone ditches you, don\u2019t care and do the same\/ or worse!<\/p>\n

A similar proverb to the previous one is >><\/em><\/p>\n

Literal meaning:<\/u><\/strong> He gave us rest and he got rest<\/p>\n

Intended meaning:<\/u><\/strong> It\u2019s a way in which the person, who was left\/ dumbed, says \u201cit\u2019s better this way \u2013 for both parties\u201d \u2013 even though this person may not feel this way. It can be considered a way with which one console himself.<\/p>\n
