As Arabic language learners, you have most likely seen and heard the vocative particle <\/span>\u064a\u0627 <\/b>being used before nouns. Can you think of any examples? In this post, I thought we\u2019d understand its purpose in Arabic and look at how it is used through reading and listening to examples. Does the vocative case happen to exist in your language?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2728 <\/span>\u064a\u0627<\/b>: O\/oh\/hey<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u064a\u0627 <\/b>is a vocative particle, similar to \u201cO\u201d in English yet used much more frequently in Arabic without sounding a bit strange or archaic as it may sound in English. <\/span>\u064a\u0627 <\/b>is used to address someone or a people. The vocative can serve as a means to send an invitation to the spoken-to in order for him\/her\/them to pay attention to what the speaker wants to say. It can also put emphasis on the one being called or addressed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In some contexts, a close equivalent to modern day English is \u201cHey\u201d when calling out to someone, for example, <\/span>\u064a\u0627 \u0639\u0644\u064a<\/b> \u201cHey Ali\u201d. You will find that <\/span>\u064a\u0627 <\/b>is used in both Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and colloquial Arabic. In this post we will be looking at examples in MSA. You can find many examples of <\/span>\u064a\u0627 <\/b>in <\/span>Qur\u2019anic verses<\/b> \u0622\u064a\u0627\u062a \u0642\u064f\u0631\u0622\u0646\u064a\u0629<\/b> and <\/span>poetry \u0634\u0650\u0639\u0631<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

?The vocative in Arabic is called <\/span>\u0627\u0644\u0646\u0651\u0650\u062f\u0627\u0621\u064f <\/b>to mean the act of calling someone which is derived from the verb (<\/span>\u0646\u0627\u062f\u064e\u0649<\/b>\/<\/span>\u064a\u064f\u0646\u064e\u0627\u062f\u0650\u064a<\/b>) which means \u201cto call\u201d. The term used for the noun being called is <\/span>\u0627\u0644\u0645\u064f\u0646\u0627\u062f\u0649<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can find \u201cthe called noun\u201d or <\/span>\u0627\u0644\u0645\u064f\u0646\u0627\u062f\u0649 <\/b>in the following forms:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Singular form <\/span>\u0645\u064f\u0641\u0652\u0631\u064e\u062f <\/b>which could be a proper noun such as a name for example <\/span>\u064a\u0627 \u0633\u0644\u064a\u0645<\/b> or <\/span>\u064a\u0627 \u0644\u064a\u0644\u0649<\/b>, or intended nouns without the definite article <\/span>\u0627\u0644 <\/b>for example <\/span>\u064a\u0627 \u0631\u064e\u062c\u064f\u0644<\/b> or <\/span>\u064a\u0627 \u0648\u064e\u0644\u064e\u062f<\/b>. The called noun could also be in plural <\/span>\u062c\u064e\u0645\u0652\u0639 <\/b>and dual <\/span>\u0645\u064f\u062b\u0651\u064e\u0646\u0649 <\/b>forms for example, <\/span>\u064a\u0627 \u0623\u0637\u0641\u0627\u0644<\/b> addressing children or <\/span>\u064a\u0627 \u0631\u064e\u062c\u064f\u0644\u0627\u0646<\/b> addressing two men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If the <\/span>\u0645\u064f\u0646\u0627\u062f\u064e\u0649 <\/b>is prefixed with the definite article <\/span>\u0627\u0644<\/b>, than we add <\/span>\u0623\u064e\u064a\u0651\u064f\u0647\u0627 <\/b>before the masculine noun and <\/span>\u0623\u064e\u064a\u0651\u064e\u062a\u064f\u0647\u0627 <\/b>before the feminine noun whatever the number is (singular, dual, or plural).<\/span><\/p>\n
