What comes to mind when you hear the word <\/span>reputation \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0651\u064f\u0645\u0652\u0639\u0629<\/b>? Where you live, in your culture, how important is it to have a <\/span>good reputation \u0633\u0645\u0639\u0629 \u0643\u0648\u064a\u0633\u0629<\/b>? In this post, I thought to talk about the importance of one\u2019s reputation in the Arab world, specifically in Jordan since I\u2019m Jordanian and what it means for the individual to maintain a good reputation. Throughout this post, we\u2019ll learn vocabulary and phrases related to this topic, mostly in Levantine Arabic since you most likely will come across this subject through actual <\/span>conversations \u0627\u0644\u0645\u062d\u0627\u062f\u062b\u0627\u062a<\/b>, <\/span>social media \u0627\u0644\u062a\u0648\u0627\u0635\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0627\u062c\u062a\u0645\u0627\u0639\u064a<\/b>, and <\/span>T.V shows \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0633\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u062a<\/b>, where people usually use dialect.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We can define a reputation as the standard by which the individual is judged within his\/her <\/span>family \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0627\u0626\u0644\u0629<\/b> and <\/span>community \u0627\u0644\u0645\u062c\u062a\u0645\u0639<\/b>. A good reputation is one that adheres to the <\/span>customs \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0627\u062f\u0627\u062a<\/b>, <\/span>traditions \u0627\u0644\u062a\u0642\u0627\u0644\u064a\u062f <\/b>and even <\/span>religious values \u0627\u0644\u0642\u064a\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u062f\u064a\u0646\u064a\u0629<\/b> of that family and community. A good reputation brings <\/span>honor \u0634\u0631\u0641<\/b> to the family which in turn can help one find a spouse and a good job, while a bad reputation will bring <\/span>shame \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0627\u0631 <\/b>to the family and can continue to spread through <\/span>word of mouth \u062d\u0643\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0627\u0633<\/b> between relatives and friends which may lead to difficulty finding a husband\/wife, finding a job, gaining people\u2019s trust, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Male and female reputations:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some families of course are more <\/span>strict \u0645\u062a\u0634\u062f\u062f<\/b> than others in terms of <\/span>\u0627\u0644\u062a\u0642\u0627\u0644\u064a\u062f <\/b>,<\/span>\u0627\u0644\u0639\u0627\u062f\u0627\u062a<\/b>, and <\/span>\u0627\u0644\u0642\u064a\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u062f\u064a\u0646\u064a\u0629<\/b>, but we cannot deny that a female\u2019s reputation carries more weight than that of a males in most cases. There are certain aspects of life where a female tends to be more <\/span>careful \u062d\u0630\u0631\u0629 <\/b>such as choosing the <\/span>place of work \u0645\u0643\u0627\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0645\u0644\\\u0627\u0644\u0634\u063a\u0644<\/b>, choosing whether or not to <\/span>study abroad \u0627\u0644\u062f\u0631\u0627\u0633\u0629 \u0641\u064a \u0627\u0644\u062e\u0627\u0631\u062c<\/b>, or how <\/span>conservative<\/b> her <\/span>clothing <\/b>is <\/span>\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0628\u0627\u0633 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u062d\u062a\u0634\u0645<\/b>. A male\u2019s reputation is of course important, yet, there tends to be more leeway and <\/span>forgiveness \u0627\u0644\u062a\u0633\u0627\u0645\u062d<\/b> given to males if they stray away from the righteous path.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here is an example of something that relies on one\u2019s reputation:<\/span><\/p>\n

Marriage \u0627\u0644\u0632\u0648\u0627\u062c<\/b><\/p>\n

When finding a potential spouse, which can either be with the help of family and <\/span>relatives \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0642\u0627\u0631\u0628 <\/b>or on one’s own, it is the norm to ask around about the person\u2019s reputation and does not come across as nosy. Before a woman receives a suitor for example, her family asks around about the man\u2019s reputation which can involve details about his job, his family, where he graduated from, and how religious he is. Sometimes they even ask if he smokes, which to some women can be a deal breaker.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Here are some examples of how we would phrase such questions in Levantine Arabic:<\/span><\/p>\n

What does he do?<\/span><\/p>\n

Is he from a good family?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u0628\u062f\u062e\u0646\u061f<\/b><\/p>\n

Does he smoke?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u0634\u0648 \u062f\u0627\u0631\u0633\u061f<\/b><\/p>\n

What did he study?<\/span><\/p>\n

Here is an example of something that affects one\u2019s reputation:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Education \u0627\u0644\u062a\u0639\u0644\u064a\u0645<\/b><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s begin with graduating high school which in Jordan is called <\/span>\u201ctawjihi\u201d \u0627\u0644\u062a\u0648\u062c\u064a\u0647\u064a<\/b>. It\u2019s a big deal to get a <\/span>high average \u0645\u0639\u062f\u0644 \u0639\u0627\u0644\u064a<\/b>. <\/span>Passing \u0627\u0644\u0646\u062c\u0627\u062d <\/b>with a low average, can be considered dishonorable to the family. <\/span>Failing \u0627\u0644\u0631\u0633\u0648\u0628 <\/b>to some families is considered very dishonorable. So, you can imagine the pressure students have during this year. All they do is study. Then comes <\/span>university \u0627\u0644\u062c\u0627\u0645\u0639\u0629<\/b>. Perhaps the most honorable thing a student can do is get into <\/span>Jordan university \u0627\u0644\u062c\u0627\u0645\u0639\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0631\u062f\u0646\u064a\u0629<\/b> with a high average and study to become a doctor or engineer. The competition is fierce to say the least.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
