Before we talk about the passive form in Arabic, let&#8217;s remind ourselves what a passive sentence is in English:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our Arabic teacher confirmed yesterday that the vocabulary quiz is today.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was confirmed yesterday by our Arabic teacher that the vocabulary quiz is today.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was confirmed yesterday that the vocabulary quiz is today.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All three of these sentences mean the same. In sentence 1, the verb &#8220;confirmed&#8221; is active. In sentences 2 and 3, the verb &#8220;it was confirmed&#8221; is passive. The passive puts more emphasis on what is being confirmed rather than who is confirming which is not always important. Notice that in sentence 3, the subject is omitted altogether.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In English, we use the verb &#8220;to be&#8221; + passive participle to form the passive (it was confirmed, they are sold, she has been taught, etc.). The most significant indicator of the passive is the\u00a0 <strong>\u0636\u0645\u0629<\/strong> at the beginning of both the past and present verbs.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Here are some more examples:<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: right\"><b>.\u064a\u064f\u062a\u064e\u0648\u064e\u0642\u0651\u064e\u0639 \u0623\u0646 \u064a\u064e\u0633\u0652\u0642\u064f\u0637 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u064e\u0637\u064e\u0631 \u0628\u0639\u062f \u064a\u064e\u0648\u0645\u064a\u0646<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rain is expected to fall in two days.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: right\"><b>\u00a0.\u0623\u064f\u0645\u0650\u0631\u064e \u0627\u0644\u062c\u064e\u064a\u0634 \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0647\u064f\u062c\u0648\u0645\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The army was ordered to attack.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: right\"><b>.\u064a\u064f\u0642\u064e\u0627\u0644 \u0623\u0646 \u0647\u0630\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0628\u064e\u064a\u062a \u0645\u064e\u0647\u062c\u0648\u0631<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is said that this house is deserted.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Note that if you were to come across the passive voice in Arabic in a text that did not provide <strong>\u062d\u0631\u0643\u0627\u062a<\/strong> the diacritics or short vowels, you may mistake a passive verb for an active verb where it may not make sense.\u00a0 For example let&#8217;s take a sentence from above and and take out the <\/span><b>\u062d\u0631\u0643\u0627\u062a.<\/b><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: right\"><b>!\u0633\u0631\u0642\u062a \u0645\u0646\u064a \u0646\u0642\u0648\u062f\u064a<\/b><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If\u00a0 <\/span><b>\u0633\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0642\u0652\u062a\u064f is &#8220;I stole&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, it wouldn&#8217;t make sense because it would make the sentence &#8221; I stole money from me.&#8221; It could be &#8220;<\/span><b>she stole&#8221; \u0633\u064e\u0631\u0650\u0642\u064e\u062a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which makes sense but it may contradict the rest of the text. Therefore, when reading an Arabic text, keep track of your <strong>subjects<\/strong> and that will help you interpret the passive voice correctly.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I hope this post helped clarify the passive voice in Arabic.
