In today’s blog post, we’re going to talk about a specific musical genre \u0646\u0648\u0639 \u0645\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0648\u0633\u064a\u0642\u0649<\/strong>\u00a0that has recently emerged \u0638\u0647\u0631\u062a \u0645\u0624\u062e\u0631\u064b\u0627<\/strong> within the music industry \u0645\u062c\u0627\u0644 \u0635\u0646\u0627\u0639\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0648\u0633\u064a\u0642\u0649<\/strong> in Egypt. This\u00a0trend \u062a\u0648\u062c\u0651\u0647 <\/strong>is called Mahraganat Music\/ songs \u0645\u0648\u0633\u064a\u0642\u0649\/\u0623\u063a\u0627\u0646\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0647\u0631\u062c\u0627\u0646\u0627\u062a. <\/b>This blog post series will explore this term, its meaning & its purpose as well as study a specific track (in part 2 & 3).<\/p>\n

The word<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

It means in English> “Festivals”. It’s the plural of Mahragaan<\/strong> \u0645\u0647\u0631\u062c\u0627\u0646<\/strong> “a festival”.<\/p>\n

It’s believed that it’s called ‘festivals music’ due to the happy, exciting atmosphere it creates. This is why it is often played often in weddings.<\/p>\n

This type of music is usually quick-paced \u0633\u0631\u064a\u0639\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0625\u064a\u0642\u0627\u0639 <\/strong>&\u00a0loud\/latterting \u0635\u0627\u062e\u0650\u0628\u0629. <\/b><\/p>\n

It can also be considered>\u00a0Shaabi music \u0645\u0648\u0633\u064a\u0642\u0649 \u0634\u0639\u0628\u064a\u0629 . Shaabi \u0634\u0639\u0628\u064a <\/b>mean ‘of the people’ <\/b>and it refers to music that is done by people, for people, played in local neighbourhoods\/ streets, etc. It also sounds like some digital\/ electronic instruments were utilised in making of it.<\/p>\n

The Message\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

It’s often composed and performed by young people (males) in a small, modest studios.\u00a0It can be seen as way in which young people can express their feelings and frustration about everyday life problems, such as: friendship<\/strong> \u0627\u0644\u0635\u0651\u062f\u0627\u0642\u0629<\/strong>, betrayal<\/strong> \u0627\u0644\u062e\u064a\u0627\u0646\u0629<\/strong>, poverty<\/strong> \u0627\u0644\u0641\u0642\u0631<\/strong> and drugs<\/strong> \u0627\u0644\u0645\u062e\u062f\u0651\u0631\u0627\u062a. <\/strong>These topics are clearly referred to in the lyrics that uses simple, everyday words – mostly slang terms though; a feature that could make it a bit difficult (even for Arabs\/ non-Egyptians) to understand.<\/p>\n

This phenomenon has attracted many journalists attention who wrote articles and produced documentaries<\/a> \u0623\u0646\u062a\u062c\u0648\u0627 \u0648\u062b\u0627\u0626\u0642\u064a\u0627\u062a<\/a><\/strong> about it.<\/p>\n

1- Frataka \u0641\u0631\u062a\u0643\u0629<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

This is one of the very first and popular songs of this type. It was released in 2014 by a band in Alexandria, called Ed-dakhlaawiyyah \u0627\u0644\u062f\u062e\u0644\u0627\u0648\u064a\u0629<\/strong>. The title ‘Fartaka’ means, according to this<\/a> article, a state of excessive joy. The slang used in the lyrics is quite unique to a specific age group (young men). Although it can be a bit difficult to follow the lyrics<\/a>, you can always enjoy music \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

As is the case with anything new, this music has<\/strong> been heavily criticised \u0627\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0642\u0650\u062f\u064e\u062a\u0652 \u0628\u0650\u0634\u0650\u062f\u0651\u0629<\/strong>. You can read more about the constant attempts by the Musicians’ union to ban this ‘controversial’ type of music \u0644\u0650\u062d\u0638\u0631 \u0647\u0630\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0648\u0639 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u062b\u064a\u0631 \u0644\u0644\u062c\u062f\u0644 \u0645\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0648\u0633\u064a\u0642\u0649<\/strong> in this article<\/a> and this one.<\/a> This ban is based on the claim that the lyrics of such songs are inappropriate \u063a\u064a\u0631 \u0644\u0627\u0626\u0642\u0629. <\/strong>However, these is a constant push back from these groups as they refuse ““be silenced<\/a>“.<\/p>\n
