{"id":3803,"date":"2012-03-13T18:04:50","date_gmt":"2012-03-13T18:04:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/arabic\/?p=3803"},"modified":"2014-07-11T15:08:50","modified_gmt":"2014-07-11T15:08:50","slug":"classy-insults-in-classical-arabic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/arabic\/classy-insults-in-classical-arabic\/","title":{"rendered":"Quick Intro to &#8220;Classy Insults&#8221; in Classical Arabic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>!\u0644\u0627 \u062a\u064e\u0641\u0652\u062c\u064e\u0639\u064f\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0648\u0627 \u064a\u0627 \u0623\u064e\u0635\u0652\u062f\u0650\u0642\u064e\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0627\u0626\u064a\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>(Don&#8217;t panic, my friends!)<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s post is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #ff0000;\"><strong>not<\/strong><\/span> yet another vulgar compilation of<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong> \u0627\u0644\u0643\u0644\u0627\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0641\u0627\u062d\u0634<\/strong><\/span> (profanities) such as the ones you can often run into on the Web in almost any language&#8230;\u00a0Not at all.<\/p>\n<p>What you will find here is a quick intro to rather &#8220;classier&#8221; examples and paradigms of how insults are proffered in classical Arabic: <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u0627\u0644\u0639\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0628\u0650\u064a\u064e\u0651\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0641\u064f\u0635\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0649<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let us for now focus on &#8220;<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u0627\u0644\u0623\u0628\u062c\u062f\u064a\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0627\u062a<\/strong><\/span>&#8221; (&#8220;the basics.&#8221;)<span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Probably the most common swear word in classical Arabic is &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u062a\u064e\u0628\u064b\u0651\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0627<\/strong><\/span>&#8221; (read &#8220;Tabban&#8221;), which can come alone, as in the interjection &#8220;<span style=\"color: #008000;\">!\u00a0<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u062a\u064e\u0628\u064b\u0651\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0627<\/span><\/strong>&#8221; (&#8220;damn!&#8221;), or &#8220;<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u0627\u0644\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0639\u0652\u0646\u064e\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0629<\/strong><\/span>&#8221; (literally &#8220;damnation.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Before we go further, notice with me one particularly interesting observation about the word &#8220;<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u0644\u0639\u0652\u0646\u064e\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0629<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, which, to my knowledge, has never been picked up anywhere: Its trilateral root, <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u0644&#8211;\u0639&#8211;\u0646<\/span><\/strong><\/span>&#8221; is intrinsically linked to its anagram &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u0646&#8211;\u0639&#8211;\u0644<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, which forms the word &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u0646\u0639\u0644<\/strong><\/span>&#8221; meaning a &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>shoe<\/strong><\/span>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the fact that a shoe may ordinarily step on dirty things (<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u0646\u062c\u0627\u0633\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0627\u062a<\/strong><\/span>),\u00a0such a linguistic connection between the Arabic words of &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>damnation<\/strong><\/span>&#8221; and &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>shoe<\/strong><\/span>&#8221; may help explain why\u00a0throwing it at someone is culturally tantamount to a strong insult within the Arab world.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You may recall the images of a group of Iraqis throwing their shoes at a falling statue of<\/span> <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u0635\u062f\u064e\u0651\u0627\u0645 \u062d\u064f\u0633\u064a\u0646<\/strong><\/span> (Saddam Hussein) in the Spring of\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>2003<\/strong><\/span>,<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> or more recently the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u062c\u0648\u0631\u062c \u0628\u0648\u0634\u00a0\u0627\u0644\u0625\u0628\u0646<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(George W. Bush Junior) during a press conferen<span style=\"color: #000000;\">ce in Baghdad in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>2008<\/strong><\/span>, prompting a huge buzz and countlessly many\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/arabic\/my-fave-five-politically-sarcastic-jokes-in-arabic-before-and-after-the-arab-spring\/\">political jokes<\/a><\/strong> at a time when the former US President was about to end his second term, and leaving many Americans and Europeans wondering: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Just why the shoes?!<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Even today, in the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u062f\u064e\u0627\u0631\u0650\u062c\u064e\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0629<\/strong><\/span> (informal Arabic) spoken in the <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Maghreb <\/strong><\/span>countries of <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Tunisia<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Algeria<\/strong><\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Morocco<\/strong><\/span>, you will find people saying &#8220;<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u064a\u064e\u0646\u0652\u0639\u064e\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0644\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>&#8221; (a verb that sounds like the Arabic word for &#8220;shoe&#8221;) instead of &#8220;<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u064a\u064e\u0644\u0652\u0639\u064e\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0640\u0646<\/strong><\/span>&#8221; (the properly designated word for &#8220;damn.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>At any rate, these expressions can also be directed towards someone who, for one reason or another, earned your wrath.
