\u00a0<\/strong>Latifa Al-Zayyat<\/strong> (\u0644\u0637\u064a\u0641\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0632\u064a\u0627\u062a) is a distinguished novelist (<\/strong>\u0631\u0648\u0627\u0626\u064a\u0629<\/strong>), literary critic (<\/strong>\u0646\u0627\u0642\u062f\u0629 \u0623\u062f\u0628\u064a\u0629<\/strong>), an academic (<\/strong>\u0623\u0633\u062a\u0627\u0630\u0629 \u062c\u0627\u0645\u0639\u064a\u0629<\/strong>) and an intellectual (<\/strong>\u0645\u0641\u0643\u0631\u0629<\/strong>). She was born in Damietta, on August 8, 1923. She received her education at Egyptian schools and later obtained her PhD in English literature from Cairo University in 1957. She is also a political activist (<\/strong>\u0646\u0627\u0634\u0637\u0629 \u0633\u064a\u0627\u0633\u064a\u0629<\/strong>) a social reformist (<\/strong>\u0645\u0635\u0644\u062d\u0629 \u0627\u062c\u062a\u0645\u0627\u0639\u064a\u0629<\/strong>). She struggled for Egypt\u2019s independence from the British occupation and for women\u2019s rights in Egypt. <\/strong><\/p>\n

She published influential works in the fields of critical theory and literary criticism, especially dealing with the image of women in Arabic novels. In addition, she is a distinguished novelist who wrote a seminal novel in 1960 called \u201cthe Open Door\u201d (<\/strong>\u0627\u0644\u0628\u0627\u0628 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0641\u062a\u0648\u062d<\/strong>) which was also produced into a film starred by Faten Hamama in 1963. About this novel, <\/strong>Latifa Al-Zayyat<\/strong> said: \u201cin the novel, I aimed at crystallizing three levels of significance. The first one deals with the development of the female protagonist, and its related to the second which deals with developments in Egypt at that period. As for the third level, it incorporates a commentary on the values of the middle class and its practices and how they prevent the country from a take off.\u201d \u201cThe Open Door\u201d (<\/strong>\u0627\u0644\u0628\u0627\u0628 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0641\u062a\u0648\u062d<\/strong>) is one of my favourite novels and movies. It has been a major inspiration for me since a very early age. It has also been an inspiration for a large number of Arab women who seek to challenge the status quo for women in the Arab world and achieve some sort of change. There is a famous blog based on the main character in the novel called (<\/strong>\u0643\u0644\u0646\u0627 \u0644\u064a\u0644\u0649<\/strong>) (http:\/\/kolenalaila.com\/<\/a>) which is a collection of blog entries written by Arab women who seek to change their situation. <\/strong><\/p>\n
