Fairouz (\u0641\u064e\u064a\u0631\u0648\u0632), one of the most famous and respected Arab artists, is a Lebanese singer (\u0645\u064f\u063a\u064e\u0646\u0651\u0650\u064a\u064e\u0629) \u00a0born on November 21, 1935. Born Nouhad Haddad, she acquired her stage name Fairouz which means \u2018turquoise\u2019 after she was introduced to Halim el-Roumi (\u062d\u064e\u0644\u064a\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u0651\u0648\u0645\u064a), head of the Lebanese Radio Station in the 1950s. Her fame later acquired her many titles such as \u201cAmbassador to the Stars\u201d (\u0633\u064e\u0641\u064a\u0631\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0651\u064f\u062c\u0648\u0645). Having the gift of a remarkable voice, Fairouz first started singing at a very young age in school. She was discovered later by Mohammad Fleyfel (\u0645\u064f\u062d\u064e\u0645\u062f \u0641\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0641\u0650\u0644) , a musician at the Lebanese Conservatory (\u0627\u0644\u0645\u064e\u0639\u0647\u064e\u062f \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0627\u0644\u064a \u0644\u0644\u0645\u0648\u0633\u064a\u0642\u0649), at one of these school shows and was later introduced to el-Roumi and put on national radio (\u0627\u0644\u0631\u0627\u062f\u064a\u0648 \u0627\u0644\u0648\u0637\u0646\u064a). It was her singing at the Lebanese Radio Station that caught the attention of the Rahbani Brothers (\u0627\u0644\u0623\u064e\u062e\u064e\u0648\u064a\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u0651\u064e\u062d\u0628\u0627\u0646\u064a) ,Assi and Mansour, two musicians also working at the station at the time. Assi started composing songs for her, and what is known as one of the most significant artistic collaborations(\u062a\u064e\u0639\u0627\u0648\u064f\u0646) \u00a0emerged along with a courtship and a marriage. On January 23, 1955, Fairouz and Assi got married, and long journey of success had begun. With the Rahbani Brothers, Fairouz sang for love(\u0627\u0644\u062d\u064f\u0628\u0651) , she sang for her country(\u0627\u0644\u0648\u064e\u0637\u064e\u0646) , she sang for peace(\u0627\u0644\u0633\u0651\u0644\u0627\u0645) , she sang for Palestine and she sang for the world. What she refused to sing for were individuals, as in political figures per se, for in what is evidently one of her strongest political statements, Fairouz refused in 1969 to sing for then Algerian President Boumedienne and was punished by being banned on national radio for six months. In later years, and as Assi\u2019s health started deteriorating, Fairouz turned to their son, Ziad, for artistic collaborations. During the 1990s and more so in the last ten years Fairouz produced several albums with Ziad. Her choice to conform to Ziad\u2019s genre of Oriental Jazz and move away from the more classical Lebanese music people were used to hear her sing has brought her some criticism but also much appreciation.<\/p>\n

In a fresh take on the jazz classic \u2018Autumn Leaves\u2019, Fairouz sings for fall through Ziad\u2019s acoustic interpretation of this classic. \u2018Bi ZakkirBilKharif\u2019 (\u0628\u064a\u0630\u064e\u0643\u0651\u0650\u0631 \u0628\u0627\u0644\u062e\u064e\u0631\u064a\u0641) encapsulates a very Lebanese reminiscent kind of fall that is very nostalgic and romantic (\u0631\u0648\u0645\u0627\u0646\u0633\u0650\u064a\u0651)at the same time. She sings for a lost love whose face reminds her of fall and asks him if he still admires fall like she does. And so in this song, nostalgia (\u0627\u0644\u062d\u064e\u0646\u064a\u0646), the best known characteristic of Fairouz\u2019s singing, is brought out through one of the year\u2019s most romantic seasons. As I look around me today and see all those fall leaves (\u0623\u0648\u0631\u0627\u0642 \u0627\u0644\u062e\u064e\u0631\u064a\u0641) \u00a0and smell the wind changing, I can\u2019t but think of Fairouz and all her lost loves.<\/p>\n
