As discussed before, Arabic is a highly derivational language, and we can derive different forms from one another. We learned how to make an active participle from a verb. In this post, I discuss a special type of noun that can be derived from verbs, namely (<\/span>\u0627\u0633\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0643\u0627\u0646<\/span><\/em>) \u201cnoun of place\u201d. It is a noun that indicates the place of doing an action. It follows one of two patterns (<\/span>\u0645\u0641\u0639\u0644<\/span>) and (<\/span>\u0645\u0641\u0639\u0644\u0629<\/span>), e.g. the verb (<\/span>\u062f\u062e\u0644<\/span>) means \u201center\u201d, and from this root verb we have (<\/span>\u0645\u062f\u062e\u0644<\/span>) which means \u201centrance\u201d, and the verb (<\/span>\u062f\u0631\u0633<\/span>) means \u201cstudy\u201d, and from this root verb we have (<\/span>\u0645\u062f\u0631\u0633\u0629<\/span>) which means \u201cschool\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

It should be noted that not all verbs can be used in this form. Moreover, there is no rule to tell us which form we can use to make noun of place from a certain verb. Sometimes, we find verbs that have 2 forms of noun of place with different meanings, e.g. he verb (<\/span>\u0643\u062a\u0628<\/span>) means \u201cwrite\u201d, and from this root verb we have 2 nouns of place (<\/span>\u0645\u0643\u062a\u0628<\/span>) which means \u201coffice or desk\u201d, and (<\/span>\u0645\u0643\u062a\u0628\u0629<\/span>) which means \u201clibrary\u201d. This is a very useful form to learn and remember because it can help us guess the meanings of some nouns that we encounter if we know the root verb and what it means. Below, I list some common verbs and their noun of place.<\/span><\/p>\n
