Nazik was born in Baghdad in 1922 to a literary family. Both her parents wrote poetry. Her father (<\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u0635\u0627\u062f\u0642 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0644\u0627\u0626\u0643\u0629<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">) was a famous Iraqi poet and writer who edited a 20 volume encyclopedia. Her mother (<\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u0633\u0644\u0645\u0649 \u0639\u0628\u062f \u0627\u0644\u0631\u0632\u0627\u0642<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">) wrote poetry under the pseudonym. Nazik\u2019s upbringing in a literary household encouraged her to start writing poetry at a very early age. She wrote her first poem at the age of 10. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Nazik was trained as a teacher of Arabic and graduated in 1944 in Baghdad. After that, she obtained a degree in music in 1949, and an MA in comparative literature from the University of Wisconsin in the USA in 1959. Later, she worked as a lecturer at the University of Baghdad and the University of Basra where she met her husband. Nazik knew Arabic, English, French German and Latin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Nazik published some poems in newspapers and magazines during her university study, and she published her first poetry book in 1947 under the title (<\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u0639\u0627\u0634\u0642\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u064a\u0644<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">) \u201cshe who loves the night\u201d. Nazik\u2019s poetry is very sad, and deals with topics like death, disillusion, illness, etc. One of her best-known poems is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">(<\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u0627\u0644\u0643\u0648\u0644\u064a\u0631\u0627<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">) <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> &#8216;Cholera&#8217;, which is written in free verse. She liked to write religious and moralistic poetry. In addition, she translated poems by Byron, Thomas Gray and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Nazik is considered one of the most influential literary writers in the Arab world, and she is said to be among the first Arab poets to use free verse (<\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u0627\u0644\u0634\u0639\u0631 \u0627\u0644\u062d\u0631<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">). She is also a very respectable critic (<\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u0646\u0627\u0642\u062f\u0629<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">) who contributed very important literary criticisms, e.g. \u201cIssues of Contemporary Poetry\u201d (<\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u0642\u0636\u0627\u064a\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0634\u0639\u0631 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0639\u0627\u0635\u0631<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">) and \u201cPsychology of Poetry\u201d (<\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u0633\u0627\u064a\u0643\u0648\u0644\u0648\u062c\u064a\u0629<\/span><span dir=\"rtl\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u0627\u0644\u0634\u0639\u0631<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">).
