{"id":11842,"date":"2015-12-17T10:00:38","date_gmt":"2015-12-17T14:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/?p=11842"},"modified":"2015-12-16T09:02:56","modified_gmt":"2015-12-16T13:02:56","slug":"shangri-la","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/shangri-la\/","title":{"rendered":"Shangri-La"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After exploring the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/the-old-town-of-lijiang\/\">old town of Lijiang<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/tiger-leaping-gorge\/\">trekking Tiger Leaping Gorge<\/a>, and chilling in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/haba-a-village-in-the-clouds\/\">Haba Village<\/a>, our Yunnan trip rolls on. <strong>Shangri-la<\/strong> (\u9999\u683c\u91cc\u62c9 &#8211; xi\u0101ng g\u00e9 l\u01d0 l\u0101) is a small town nestled in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/yunnan-province\/\">Yunnan Province&#8217;s<\/a> north west corner. It was originally named Zhongdian, but they officially changed the name in December 2001 in an effort to increase tourism to the area. Most people know Shangri-la as the mythical place described in James Hilton&#8217;s novel &#8220;Lost Horizon.&#8221; There has been much debate over the true location with Tibet, Sichuan and Yunnan all laying claim. Efforts to rebuild it have been going on ever since. It is still possible to visit and see the remaining half, and hopefully it will be totally rebuilt within a year or two. It has three different buildings with the main building displaying a large Buddhist statue. Baiji Temple is translated to 100 chickens temple as there are many chickens running around the temple grounds. It is just up the hill from the Golden Temple. One such place is <strong>Napa Lake<\/strong> (\u7eb3\u5e15\u6d77 &#8211; n\u00e0 p\u00e0 h\u01cei). It&#8217;s a great way to get some exercise and get up close with nature and animals. Tibetan style houses dot the perimeter of the lake housing all the Tibetan people living in the area. The admission is free, however some people have started to make checkpoints where they stop visitors and ask for a 60 yuan fee. On the other side of the town is <strong>Pudacuo National Park<\/strong> (\u666e\u8fbe\u63aa\u56fd\u5bb6\u516c\u56ed &#8211; p\u01d4 d\u00e1 cu\u00f2 gu\u00f3 ji\u0101 g\u014dng yu\u00e1n), the first national park in China. After doing a bit of research we opted out of this attraction also because of the inflated entrance ticket. Anyone is allowed to join and most of the dances are traditional Tibetan style.
