Go back and read that first post if you haven&#8217;t to get caught up. Let&#8217;s start with the answers to the practice questions I gave:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Practice Question Answers<\/h2>\n<p>1. Your friend is outside of your door and you invite them in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Answer<\/strong>: \u8fdb\u6765 (j\u00ecn l\u00e1i) &#8211; This basically means &#8220;come in,&#8221; so it makes the most sense in this example.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong>:\u00a0\u4f60\u597d\uff0c\u8fdb\u6765\u5427!<br \/>\nn\u01d0 h\u01ceo, j\u00ecn l\u00e1i ba!<br \/>\n&#8220;Hello, come on in!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2. You are at the bottom of the hill but your friend is already on top.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Answer<\/strong>: This depends on who is talking. You would want to say\u00a0\u4e0a\u53bb (sh\u00e0ng q\u00f9), meaning &#8220;go up,&#8221; and your friend would say \u4e0a\u6765 (sh\u00e0ng l\u00e1i) meaning &#8220;come up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong>:\u00a0\u4ed6\u4eec\u5df2\u7ecf\u5728\u4e0a\u9762\uff0c\u54b1\u4eec\u5feb\u4e0a\u53bb.<br \/>\nt\u0101 men y\u01d0 j\u012bng z\u00e0i sh\u00e0ng mi\u00e0n, z\u00e1n men ku\u00e0i sh\u00e0ng q\u00f9<br \/>\n&#8220;They&#8217;re already on top, let&#8217;s get up there quickly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>3. Your father has returned from his business trip.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Answer<\/strong>: Since your dad has &#8220;come back,&#8221; it&#8217;s best to use\u00a0\u56de\u6765 (hu\u00ed l\u00e1i).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong>:\u00a0\u5988\u5988\u770b\uff0c\u7238\u7238\u56de\u6765\u4e86.<br \/>\nm\u0101 m\u0101 k\u00e0n, b\u00e0 ba hu\u00ed l\u00e1i le<br \/>\n&#8220;Look mom, dad has come back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. Your\u00a0friend is not at the party and you&#8217;re talking on the phone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Answer<\/strong>: You&#8217;d probably tell your friend to &#8220;come here&#8221; to the party &#8211;\u00a0\u8fc7\u6765 (gu\u00f2 l\u00e1i).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong>:\u00a0\u4f60\u4e3a\u4ec0\u4e48\u8fd8\u5728\u5bb6\u91cc\uff1f\u8fd9\u4e2a\u665a\u4f1a\u7279\u522b\u597d\u73a9\uff0c\u4f60\u5feb\u8fc7\u6765\u5427.<br \/>\nn\u01d0 w\u00e8i sh\u00e9n me h\u00e1i z\u00e0i ji\u0101 l\u01d0? zh\u00e8 ge w\u01cen hu\u00ec t\u00e8 bi\u00e9 h\u01ceo w\u00e1n, n\u01d0 ku\u00e0i gu\u00f2 l\u00e1i ba<br \/>\n&#8220;Why are you still at home? This party is really fun, hurry up and come here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">More Practice<\/h2>\n<p>Hopefully now you have a better understanding of these directional complements and how to use them. Now I&#8217;ll give you each of the directional complements we&#8217;ve been studying and provide a situation. See if you can use them to make a full sentence in Chinese matching the situation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>to come down<\/em> (\u4e0b\u6765 &#8211; xi\u00e0 l\u00e1i) = Your friend is upstairs in their apartment\u00a0but you don&#8217;t want to go up.<\/li>\n<li><em>to go down<\/em> (\u4e0b\u53bb &#8211; xi\u00e0 q\u00f9) = You are on top of a hill you&#8217;ve hiked up but it&#8217;s getting dark.<\/li>\n<li><em>to come up<\/em> (\u4e0a\u6765 &#8211; sh\u00e0ng l\u00e1i) = There&#8217;s a nice view from the roof and you want your friends to come and see it.<\/li>\n<li><em>to go up<\/em> (\u4e0a\u53bb &#8211; sh\u00e0ng q\u00f9) = Your company is having a meeting a few floors above your office.<\/li>\n<li><em>to come in<\/em> (\u8fdb\u6765 &#8211; j\u00ecn l\u00e1i) = Someone is knocking at your door.<\/li>\n<li><em>to go in<\/em> (\u8fdb\u53bb &#8211; j\u00ecn q\u00f9) = It&#8217;s very cold outside and there&#8217;s a shopping mall nearby.<\/li>\n<li><em>to come out<\/em> (\u51fa\u6765 &#8211; ch\u016b l\u00e1i) = Your friend is still in their room and you want to leave soon.<\/li>\n<li><em>to go out<\/em> (\u51fa\u53bb &#8211; ch\u016b q\u00f9) = It&#8217;s boring sitting around the house when it&#8217;s such a nice day.<\/li>\n<li><em>to come back<\/em> (\u56de\u6765 &#8211; hu\u00ed l\u00e1i) = Your classmate is leaving on vacation and you want to know when they&#8217;re going to return.<\/li>\n<li><em>to go back<\/em> (\u56de\u53bb &#8211; hu\u00ed q\u00f9) = You&#8217;re in Shanghai on a business trip but will go back to Beijing the next day.<\/li>\n<li><em>to come over<\/em> (\u8fc7\u6765 &#8211; gu\u00f2 l\u00e1i) = You&#8217;re looking at clothes in a store and you want your friend to come see the shirt you&#8217;re looking at.<\/li>\n<li><em>to go over<\/em> (\u8fc7\u53bb &#8211; gu\u00f2 q\u00f9) = There&#8217;s a lake on the other side of the park you&#8217;d like to see.<\/li>\n<li><em>to get up\/to rise<\/em> (\u8d77\u6765 &#8211; q\u01d0 l\u00e1i) = It&#8217;s 7AM and your child needs to get up for school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Spend some time making sentences for those examples, write them down, save them, and study them. Also, do your best to listen for these directional complements in daily conversations &#8211; people are using them all the time.
