A great way to start building your vocabulary and practice talking about places and directions is to introduce your neighborhood<\/strong> (\u90bb\u91cc<\/span> – l\u00edn l\u01d0) or\u00a0community<\/strong> (\u793e\u533a<\/span> – sh\u00e8 q\u016b; \u5c0f\u533a – x<\/span>i\u01ceo q\u016b). If you live in a Chinese city, your neighborhood is most likely a very busy place, with all sorts of shops, businesses, and offices a short walking distance from your door. To help you talk about your ‘hood in Chinese, here are 25 words for common places:<\/p>\n

It should be noted that when it comes to hotels and restaurants, many words are used and are often interchangeable. I gave two examples above for “hotel<\/strong>” (\u996d\u5e97 and \u9152\u5e97), but you might also see\u00a0\u5bbe\u9986 (b\u012bn gu\u01cen) and \u65c5\u9986 (l\u01da gu\u01cen) used. “Restaurant<\/strong>” can also be\u00a0\u996d\u5e97 in addition to the word given above (\u9910\u9986), as well as\u00a0\u9910\u5385 (c\u0101n t\u012bng). Thankfully, most of the other words are pretty straight-forward and are the same all the time! Another interesting thing to point out is the full word for\u00a0supermarket<\/strong> (\u8d85\u7ea7\u5e02\u573a – ch\u0101o j\u00ed sh\u00ec ch\u01ceng). You’ll almost always see it written as I did above (\u8d85\u5e02) – a great example of China’s love for shortening 4-character words down to two.<\/p>\n
