Known as China&#8217;s &#8220;<strong>Ice City<\/strong>&#8221; (\u51b0\u57ce &#8211; b\u012bng ch\u00e9ng), the capital of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/better-know-a-province-part-two\/\">Heilongjiang province<\/a> is a winter wonderland if there ever was one. With its epic annual Ice and Snow Festival going on at the moment, now is the perfect time to take a short trip there. Here&#8217;s a brief guide on what to do with 48 hours in Harbin.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Day One<\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">St. Sophia Cathedral<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_12936\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12936\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12936\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/DSC_0013.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/DSC_0013.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/DSC_0013-350x235.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12936\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beautiful St. Sophia<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Russian influence is strong in Harbin, and nowhere is this more evident than the stunning <strong>St. Sophia Cathedral<\/strong> (\u5723\u7d22\u83f2\u4e9a\u6559\u5802 &#8211; sh\u00e8ng su\u01d2 f\u0113i y\u00e0 ji\u00e0o t\u00e1ng). The first generation of Harbin Russians moved there in order to work on the railroad. In the 1920s, the city was flooded with over 100,000\u00a0Russian White \u00e9migr\u00e9s. While there aren&#8217;t so many Russians living in Harbin today, the beautiful church remains. It is now home to the\u00a0Municipal Architecture and Art Museum, which isn&#8217;t really worth checking out. Take a walk over there to check out the <strong>Ice and Snow Happy Valley<\/strong> (\u51b0\u96ea\u6b22\u4e50\u8c37 &#8211; b\u012bng xu\u011b hu\u0101n l\u00e8 g\u01d4) for lots of fun on the frozen river. We also saw people riding horses and little dune-buggy vehicles. You&#8217;ll see plenty of interesting sculptures, people engaged in intense games of ping-pong, and one of the ubiquitous free exercise parks that seem to be around every corner in China. Strike up a conversation with locals and practice your Chinese. Many people say that Harbin is one of the best places to study and speak standard Mandarin.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Snow Sculpture Expo<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_12951\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12951\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12951\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/Harbin12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/Harbin12.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/Harbin12-350x250.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A few of the many amazing sculptures.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Just across the river, you&#8217;ll find the <strong>Sun Island Park<\/strong> (\u592a\u9633\u5c9b\u516c\u56ed &#8211; t\u00e0i y\u00e1ng d\u01ceo g\u014dng yu\u00e1n). You can take a cable car here, catch a bus or a cab, or just walk. Unlike the bigger Ice and Snow World, this one is better seen during the day. Take good care of your electronics, too &#8211; my camera just about froze over and the battery died after about half an hour. If you need to warm up, there are a few little huts selling things like instant noodles and coffee.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Zhaolin Park<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_12953\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12953\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12953\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/Harbin14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/Harbin14.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/01\/Harbin14-350x250.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12953\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fun for big kids, too!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After getting dinner, you might as well check out\u00a0<strong>Zhaolin Park<\/strong> (\u5146\u9e9f\u516c\u56ed \u2013 zh\u00e0o l\u00edn g\u014dng yu\u00e1n). This is the smallest, cheapest, and easiest festival venue to visit from downtown. The sculptures here aren&#8217;t quite as impressive as those at the Ice and Snow World, but it&#8217;s a good warm-up. Plus, it&#8217;s very family-friendly, usually with an area full of Disney characters. The park is open until 9 PM and the cost is 150\/person and free for children under 1.2 meters.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s enough excitement for day one. Be sure to rest up, because there&#8217;s a lot to do on your <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/48-hours-in-harbin-part-two\/\">second day in Harbin<\/a>.
