It’s been a long journey so far learning Chinese related to air travel. We picked up some air travel vocabulary<\/a>, booked a flight<\/a>, and used Chinese at the airport<\/a>. Finally, it’s time to board the plane and take the flight. Today’s Chinese lesson is about being on the plane.<\/p>\n

Boarding the Flight<\/h2>\n

While you’re waiting, you’ll want to listen for an announcement. It might sound something like this:<\/p>\n

Get on the plane and see if you have a\u00a0window seat<\/strong> (\u9760\u7a97\u53e3\u7684\u5ea7\u4f4d – k\u00e0o chu\u0101ng k\u01d2u de zu\u00f2 w\u00e8i) or an aisle seat<\/strong> (\u9760\u8d70\u5eca\u7684\u5ea7\u4f4d – k\u00e0o z\u01d2u l\u00e1ng de zu\u00f2 w\u00e8i). If you need some help, one of the flight attendants<\/strong> (\u98de\u884c\u670d\u52a1\u5458 – f\u0113i x\u00edng f\u00fa w\u00f9 yu\u00e1n) can guide you to your seat. Just don’t try to go in the cockpit<\/strong> (\u9a7e\u9a76\u8231 – ji\u00e0 sh\u01d0 c\u0101ng) – the pilot<\/strong> (\u98de\u884c\u5458 – f\u0113i x\u00edng yu\u00e1n) wouldn’t be too happy. Make sure you buckle your seatbelt<\/strong> (\u5b89\u5168\u5e26 – \u0101n qu\u00e1n d\u00e0i) and have your seat and tray table<\/strong>\u00a0(\u9910\u684c – c\u0101n zhu\u014d) in the upright position. Listen to the announcement so you know where to find the emergency exits<\/strong> (\u7d27\u6025\u51fa\u53e3 – j\u01d0n j\u00ed ch\u016b k\u01d2u), as well as your life jacket<\/strong> (\u6551\u751f\u8863 – ji\u00f9 sh\u0113ng y\u012b) and oxygen mask<\/strong> (\u6c27\u6c14\u9762\u7f69 – y\u01ceng q\u00ec mi\u00e0n zh\u00e0o). You’ll know that you’re ready to take off when you hear an announcement such as:<\/p>\n

Once you get to a cruising altitude, the flight attendants will usually come around with drinks. Here’s a sample conversation about ordering drinks on the flight:<\/p>\n

On longer flights, you’ll even get a full meal. On Chinese flights, expect a choice of rice<\/strong> (\u7c73\u996d – m\u01d0 f\u00e0n) or noodles<\/strong> (\u9762\u6761 – mi\u00e0n ti\u00e1o). Hopefully you have a smooth flight, but sometimes you have to deal with a bit of\u00a0turbulence<\/strong> (\u6e4d\u6d41 – tu\u0101n li\u00fa). In case you start to feel sick, make sure you know where to find your air sickness bag<\/strong> (\u6655\u673a\u5455\u5410\u888b – y\u00f9n j\u012b \u01d2u t\u00f9 d\u00e0i). You can\u00a0watch a movie<\/strong> (\u770b\u7535\u5f71 – k\u00e0n di\u00e0n y\u01d0ng), read a book<\/strong> (\u770b\u4e66 – k\u00e0n sh\u016b),\u00a0listen to music<\/strong> (\u542c\u97f3\u4e50 – t\u012bng y\u012bn yu\u00e8), or just\u00a0sleep<\/strong> (\u7761\u89c9 – shu\u00ec ji\u00e0o).<\/p>\n
