For those who remember the entry where I spent an hour looking for a pizza place in Beijing, the hunt is on again in Shenzhen.\u00a0 There is a great pizza place here run by a \u534e\u88d4<\/strong> (overseas Chinese – in this case ABC) from New York- rather than a \u6d77\u5f52<\/strong> (Chinese returned from abroad) or a franchise owner.\u00a0 The specialty of the place is that it has \u8fdb\u53e3\u70e4\u7bb1<\/strong> (imported ovens) and the pizza dough is \u5168\u9ea6<\/strong> (whole wheat).\u00a0 I found myself most amazed at the quality of the \u829d\u58eb<\/strong> (cheese).\u00a0 When you have all but \u5403\u817b\u4e86<\/strong> (gotten sick of [from eating too much]) takeout restaurant food and you \u5403\u4e0d\u4e0b<\/strong> (cannot physically eat) anything but familiar foods, this pizza place sounded like a good idea.\u00a0 As soon as my pizza arrived, I took one look and knew I’d happily \u5403\u5f97\u5b8c<\/strong> (finish the whole thing), just another \u5bb5\u591c<\/strong> (late night snack) in hustle-bustle Shenzhen.<\/p>\n

\u534e\u88d4 hua2yi4 – overseas person of Chinese descent
\n\u6d77\u5f52 hai3gui1 – Chinese returning from overseas
\n\u8fdb\u53e3 jin4kou3 – imported
\n\u70e4\u7bb1 kao3xiang1 – oven
\n\u829d\u58eb zhi1shi4 – cheese
\n\u5403\u817b\u4e86 chi1ni4le – to have had one’s fill of a particular food, to no longer be able to eat a certain food
\n\u5403\u4e0d\u4e0b chi1bu2xia4 can’t physically eat
\n\u5403\u5f97\u5b8c chi1de1wan2\u00a0 – able to finish a food
\n\u5bb5\u591c xiao1ye4 – midnight snacks – note: it’s called \u591c\u5bb5 up north, but \u5bb5\u591c comes from Cantonese (as far as I can tell)
