Nationalities in Chinese are pretty easy \u2013 it\u2019s the same pattern for every nationality. The pattern is composed of the country one is from + the word for people in Chinese \u4eba (R\u00e9n). \u00a0For example, Thailand in Chinese is \u6cf0\u56fd (T\u00e0igu\u00f3), so a Thai person will be \u6cf0\u56fd + \u4eba = \u6cf0\u56fd\u4eba (T\u00e0igu\u00f3 r\u00e9n). If you are an American, you will be called \u7f8e\u56fd\u4eba (M\u011bigu\u00f3 r\u00e9n) in Chinese. If you are French they will call you \u6cd5\u56fd\u4eba (F\u00e0gu\u00f3 r\u00e9n). But sometimes it\u2019s even easier \u2013 because before someone in China will ask where are you from, they will already label you as foreigner. Without getting into distinguishing countries, let\u2019s learn the different names for locals and foreigners.<\/p>\n

\u4e2d\u56fd\u4eba (<\/strong>Zh\u014dnggu\u00f3 r\u00e9n) \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The word for Chinese follows the nationality pattern: \u4e2d\u56fd means China and together with \u4eba it means Chinese \u2013 \u4e2d\u56fd\u4eba. For example:<\/p>\n

When eating in a Chinese restaurant one should use wooden chopsticks like Chinese do.<\/p>\n

\u534e\u4eba (<\/strong>Hu\u00e1r\u00e9n)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u534eis a formal name for China and the Chinese language. Like \u4e2d\u56fd, when \u534e is attached to \u4ebait means Chinese person or Chinese descent. Sometimes (depends on the context) it bears an additional meaning of a Chinese descent that maybe doesn\u2019t live in China anymore. The Chinese definition for \u534e\u4eba is:<\/p>\n

\u534e\u4eba\u662f\u5bf9\u539f\u5c45\u4e8e\u4e1c\u4e9a\u4e2d\u56fd\u5730\u533a\u65cf\u88d4\u7fa4\u4f53\u53ca\u5176\u540e\u4ee3\u7684\u6cdb\u79f0<\/p>\n

Hu\u00e1r\u00e9n sh\u00ec du\u00ec yu\u00e1n j\u016by\u00fa d\u014dngy\u00e0 zh\u014dnggu\u00f3 d\u00ecq\u016b z\u00fa y\u00ec q\u00fant\u01d0 j\u00ed q\u00ed h\u00f2ud\u00e0i de f\u00e0nch\u0113ng<\/p>\n

\u534e\u4eba is the general term for ethnic groups and their descents who originally came from China region.<\/p>\n

\u534e\u4fa8 (<\/strong>Hu\u00e1qi\u00e1o)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u4fa8 means \u201cto reside abroad\u201d, \u201ca person residing abroad\u201d. When following the formal name for China \u534e it means Chinese residing abroad or a Chinese expat. It\u2019s the first name in our list for Chinese people who doesn’t include the word \u4eba, but it refers to people nonetheless. For example:<\/p>\n

\u90a3\u534e\u4fa8\u9009\u62e9\u4e86\u56de\u5230\u4e2d\u56fd\u4f5c\u4e3a\u7ec8\u8eab\u5c45\u4f4f\u5730<\/p>\n

\u672c\u5730\u4ebais the Chinese word for locals or natives. It doesn\u2019t refer necessarily to Chinese, but to any place\u2019s locals. If, for example, you are visiting \u5e0c\u814a (X\u012bl\u00e0, Greece) you can say:<\/p>\n

\u6211\u4eec\u53ef\u4ee5\u8ba9\u672c\u5730\u4eba\u7ed9\u6211\u4eec\u63a8\u8350\u4e00\u5bb6\u65c5\u9986<\/p>\n

W\u01d2men k\u011by\u01d0 r\u00e0ng b\u011bnd\u00ec r\u00e9n g\u011bi w\u01d2men tu\u012bji\u00e0n y\u012bji\u0101 l\u01dagu\u01cen<\/p>\n

We can ask one of the locals to recommend a hotel.<\/p>\n

\u5916\u56fd\u4eba (<\/strong>W\u00e0igu\u00f3 r\u00e9n)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u5916 is a short form of \u5916\u8fb9 (W\u00e0ibian) or \u5916\u9762(W\u00e0imi\u00e0n) and means foreign or external. \u56fd is a short of \u56fd\u5bb6 (Gu\u00f3ji\u0101) and means nation, state. Together \u5916\u56fdmeans foreign country, and with \u4ebameans foreign people. If you have ever visited China you probably heard that phrase a lot, this is the common word in Chinese for foreigners. So before you are \u7f8e\u56fd\u4eba\uff0c \u6cf0\u56fd\u4eba\uff0c \u6cd5\u56fd\u4ebaetc, in Chinese you are first \u5916\u56fd\u4eba. For example:<\/p>\n

\u6709\u7684\u5916\u56fd\u4eba\u4e0d\u4e60\u60ef\u7528\u7b77\u5b50\u5403\u996d<\/p>\n

\u8001is an affectionate term used when addressing acquaintances or friends to indicate intimacy or informality. Together with \u5916it became such a common name for foreigners, and refers to any foreigner, strange or familiar. Though \u8001\u5916still bears more friendly intention than \u5916\u56fd\u4eba.<\/p>\n

Another phrase you may hear in China that refers to foreigners is \u5916\u56fd\u670b\u53cb (W\u00e0igu\u00f3 p\u00e9ngy\u01d2u) = foreign friend. Your Chinese friends may introduce you like this:<\/p>\n
