Sure, it&#8217;s a busy time of year, but that&#8217;s always the case in the world&#8217;s most populous country. In my 5+ years of living in China, I ended up doing most of my traveling during the summer months. Here are a few of the best places to visit in China in the summer, with links to more detailed posts and some videos to check out.<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center\">Beach<\/h1>\n<p>In the hot summer months, most people just want to find a beach. In China, get ready to see where the old Chinglish idiom &#8220;<strong>people mountain, people sea<\/strong>&#8221; (\u4eba\u5c71\u4eba\u6d77 &#8211; r\u00e9n sh\u0101n r\u00e9n h\u01cei) comes from when you see how crowded the beach can get. Centered on Xiamen island, there are also four other districts on the mainland plus the small island of\u00a0<strong>Gulangyu<\/strong>\u00a0(\u9f13\u6d6a\u5c7f \u2013 g\u01d4 l\u00e0ng y\u01d4). Most tourists spend a majority of their time here. That&#8217;s what summertime in <strong>Qingdao<\/strong> (\u9752\u5c9b \u2013 q\u012bng d\u01ceo) is like. Just be warned that it is a <em>very<\/em> popular place to visit, especially during the beer fest. That being said, my two trips to Qingdao in August were two of the best times I had while living in China. Give me an adventure over a beach any day! You can start off exploring the city of <strong>Guilin<\/strong>\u00a0(\u6842\u6797 &#8211; gu\u00ec l\u00edn) for a day or so &#8211; just make sure to eat the famous rice noodles. Catch the bus or take a raft along the Li River to the scenic town of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/yangshuo-photo-essay\/\"><strong>Yangshuo<\/strong><\/a> (\u9633\u6714 &#8211; y\u00e1ng shu\u00f2), where you can spend your days cycling, hiking, playing in the river, and enjoying the raucous nightlife. Walk high up in the mountains gazing down at the rushing Yangtze River and then come down the next day to see the spot where a tiger supposedly leapt over it. The scenery out here is absolutely breathtaking!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hiking Tiger Leaping Gorge\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kbSkze1TEls?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center\">City Life<\/h1>\n<p>While the concrete jungle can be incredibly hot during the summer months, that doesn&#8217;t mean you shouldn&#8217;t visit any cities on your trip! Summertime in Beijing is best spent outside of the ring roads. You can spend a day or two admiring the new skyline on one side of the Huangpu River and the Bund on the other for a mix of historic and futuristic architecture. Come hungry, because there&#8217;s lots of delicious food being cooked up here. You can visit some scenic water towns, hike the Yellow Mountain, or check out other famous cities like <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/a-short-trip-to-suzhou\/\"><strong>Suzhou<\/strong><\/a> (\u82cf\u5dde &#8211; s\u016b zh\u014du) or <strong>Hangzhou<\/strong> (\u676d\u5dde &#8211; h\u00e1ng zh\u014du).
