{"id":141,"date":"2009-09-17T20:26:12","date_gmt":"2009-09-18T00:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/?p=141"},"modified":"2009-09-17T20:26:12","modified_gmt":"2009-09-18T00:26:12","slug":"phrases-i-like","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/phrases-i-like\/","title":{"rendered":"Phrases I Like"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello Readers!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u8f66\u5230\u5c71\u524d\u5fc5\u6709\u8def, \u8239\u5230\u6865\u5934\u81ea\u7136\u76f4<\/strong> (che1 dao4 shan1qian2 bi4you3lu4, chuan2dao4qiao2tou2zi4ran2zhi2) (There must be a road for the car to go to the mountain, a boat will straighten out under a bridge)- This is a phrase kind of like &#8220;things work out in the end.&#8221;\u00a0 This is a phrase that I learned while studying Chinese in college, and I&#8217;ve always fallen back on this phrase when asked about how I expect something to turn out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u4e0e\u541b\u4e00\u5915\u8c08, \u80dc\u8bfb\u5341\u5e74\u4e66<\/strong> &#8211; (yu2jun1yi1xi1tan2, sheng4du2shi2nian2shu1) (Speaking with you [formal] conquers 10 years of study) It took me a little while to find an appropriate translation.\u00a0 I&#8217;d sum it up best as &#8220;having spoken with you, I&#8217;ve learned more than I would have from 10 years of study.&#8221;\u00a0 I learned this phrase while conversing with a teacher who is the aunt of a friend of mine- we had been talking about several topics for an extended period of time and this phrase came up.\u00a0 I was delighted, for this was a phrase I had been looking for for quite some time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u8bfb\u4e07\u5377\u4e66\u4e0d\u5982\u884c\u4e07\u91cc\u8def<\/strong> (du2wan4juan4shu1bu4ru2xing2wan4li3lu4)\u00a0 (Reading 10,000 books does not compare to traveling 10,000 <em>li<\/em>.)\u00a0 A <em>li<\/em> is about 500m (as of the Han dynasty, according to wikipedia).\u00a0 This is a good phrase to consider if you&#8217;re on the fence about if you should travel or not with all other things being considered.\u00a0 You could learn more outside the house than on a day on, say, wikipedia!\u00a0 Coming up I&#8217;ll discuss my favorite (and most useful) \u6210\u8bed\u00a0 in Chinese.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello Readers!
