A Chinese proverb says: \u4eba\u6015\u51fa\u540d\u732a\u6015\u58ee (r\u00e9n p\u00e0 ch\u016b m\u00edng zh\u016b p\u00e0 zhu\u00e0ng). It means \u201cpeople fear of getting famous just like pigs fear of getting fat\u201d. Everyone wants to enjoy the benefits of fame like every pig wishes to enjoy unlimited food. But both publicity and binge eating are risky. Fan Bingbing (\u8303\u51b0\u51b0), the number one celebrity in China according to Forbes, experienced at the risks firsthand.<\/p>\n

Fan Bingbing is a Chinese actress (\u5973\u6f14\u5458 n\u01da y\u01cen yu\u00e1n), producer, and pop singer. Born to a couple of artists \u2013 her father was a singer, her mother was a dancer \u2013 Fan dreamed of becoming an actress. She began acting in Chinese television series in the 90\u2019s when she was only a teenager. In couple of years she rose to stardom. She was only 23 when she won the best actress award at the The\u00a0Hundred Flowers Awards\u00a0(the Chinese equivalent of Golden Globes) for her role in the movie (\u7535\u5f71 di\u00e0n y\u01d0ng) Cell Phone<\/em>. She became famous in China, and out of China as well, with roles in X-Men: Days of Future Past<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Iron Man 3<\/em>. <\/em>She was ranked first on the \u201850 Most Beautiful People in China\u2019 list by Beijing News in 2010, and modeled for brands like L’Oreal Paris and Louis Vuitton.<\/p>\n

Fan Bingbing was topped the Forbes China Celebrity list of 2014 and held the title for four consecutive years. In 2015 and 2016, she was ranked among the world\u2019s highest paid actresses by Forbes. One of her quotes about her wealth drew a lot of attention. In an interview<\/a> from 2010, she was asked: \u4f60\u76f8\u4fe1\u90a3\u79cd\u5ac1\u5165\u8c6a\u95e8\u7684\u611f\u60c5\u5417\uff1f (n\u01d0 xi\u0101ngx\u00ecn n\u00e0 zh\u01d2ng ji\u00e0 r\u00f9 h\u00e1om\u00e9n de g\u01cenq\u00edng ma?, \u201cdo you believe in marrying into wealthy family?\u201d). Fan answered: \u6211\u6ca1\u6709\u60f3\u5ac1\u5165\u8c6a\u95e8\uff0c\u6211\u5c31\u662f\u8c6a\u95e8\uff01 (w\u01d2 m\u00e9iy\u01d2u xi\u01ceng ji\u00e0 r\u00f9 h\u00e1om\u00e9n, w\u01d2 ji\u00f9sh\u00ec h\u00e1om\u00e9n ,\u201cI don\u2019t need to, I am a wealthy family!\u201d).<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Fan was blamed for what is known in Chinese as a Yin Yang contract (\u9634\u9633\u5408\u540c y\u012bn y\u00e1ng h\u00e9 t\u00f3ng). Fan was blamed for signing two contracts for an upcoming movie to avoid paying higher taxes: one contract with an amount to be reported to the authorities and another with her real payment. Three months before the Head of Interpol, Meng Hongwei, disappeared in China, Fan mysteriously vanished (\u6d88\u5931 xi\u0101o sh\u012b) too. She has not been seen in public or made any public statements since the beginning of July. No one knows where she is and what happened to her.<\/p>\n

Fan broke her silence after three months of disappearance, in October 3th<\/sup>, with an apology note (\u81f4\u6b49\u4fe1 zh\u00ec qi\u00e0n x\u00ecn) on her Weibo account in which she sincerely apologizes to her friends, the people, the society, and the tax authority (\u7a0e\u52a1\u673a\u5173 shu\u00ec w\u00f9 j\u012b gu\u0101n). She promises to pay all her taxes and fines, and adds:<\/p>\n

On the same day, the official state media Xinhua announced the punishment of Fan for tax evasion. All her payments conclude in more than 880 million RMB (about 125 million USD). On October 15th<\/sup><\/a>, Fan was caught by paparazzi for the first time since her disappearance, walking on the streets of Beijing.<\/p>\n
