The other day I was talking with a friend and the topic of \u5730\u7406<\/strong> (geography) came up.\u00a0 He was very quick to \u5766\u7387\u5730\u627f\u8ba4<\/strong> (frankly admit) that he didn’t know where \u65b0\u897f\u5170<\/strong> (New Zealand) was until recently, and that he had always thought it was in \u6b27\u6d32<\/strong> (Europe).\u00a0 Better late than never, I suppose.\u00a0 Later, he mentioned New Zealand again and said something about a New Zealand cartoon girl wearing a New Zealand hat milking a cow next to a \u98ce\u8f66<\/strong> (windmill).\u00a0 Was he thinking of Holland? At least he knows where New Zealand is on the map.\u00a0 On the topic of maps, before coming to China I had never seen a world map with China in the \u4e2d\u95f4<\/strong> (center).\u00a0 Even world maps in the US don’t have the US in the center.\u00a0 Thinking about this from another\u00a0 \u89d2\u5ea6<\/strong> (angle), China’s name does technically translate as “middle kingdom.”\u00a0 Curious about if other acquaintances knew where New Zealand was, one said that he knew the \u5927\u6982\u7684\u4f4d\u7f6e<\/strong> (general location) but could not specifically point it out.<\/p>\n
