Smoking (\u5438\u70df x\u012b y\u0101n<\/strong>) is a bad habit (\u574f\u4e60\u60ef hu\u00e0i x\u00ed gu\u00e0n<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Cigarettes appear to have originated in Mexico and Central America around the 9th century in the form of reeds and smoking tubes. In the 19th century, the cigarette had crossed into Europe and received the name\u00a0cigarette (\u9999\u70df xi\u0101ng y\u0101n<\/strong>). Nowadays, the adverse health effects of cigarettes are a well known fact. And yet, many are still smoking. Some people think smoking is cool, some even think it\u2019s sexy, or just find it hard to avoid cigarette craving. But smoking harms your health (\u635f\u5bb3\u5065\u5eb7 s\u01d4n h\u00e0i ji\u00e0n k\u0101ng<\/strong>). It speeds up skin aging, stains teeth, decreases immune function, and cause terrible\u00a0diseases. In general, smoking is bad for your body (\u5bf9\u4f60\u7684\u8eab\u4f53\u4e0d\u597d du\u00ec n\u01d0 de sh\u0113n t\u01d0 b\u00f9 h\u01ceo<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

This bad habit effects the ones who don\u2019t smoke, too. Secondhand smoking (\u4e8c\u624b\u70df\u00e8r sh\u01d2u y\u0101n<\/strong>) is also harmful to your body (\u5bf9\u4f60\u7684\u8eab\u4f53\u6709\u5bb3du\u00ec n\u01d0 de sh\u0113n t\u01d0 y\u01d2u h\u00e0i<\/strong>). My body, for example, immediately responds in the presence of cigarette smoke (\u9999\u70df\u70df\u96fexi\u0101ng y\u0101n y\u0101n w\u00f9<\/strong>). My eyes become red and I start coughing (\u54b3\u55fdk\u00e9 sou<\/strong>) non-stop.<\/p>\n

While the tobbaco industry is thriving, many countries, and China among them, are trying to reduce smoking rates. According to the\u00a0Law of the People\u2019s Republic of China on Tobacco Monopoly<\/a>, advertisements of tobacco products are not allowed on radio, television, newspapers, or magazines. The popular Chinese social media website Sina Weibo did more than that. In 2017, to support China\u2019s efforts to cut smoking rates, the site has removed one of its emojis. The discarded emoji was wearing sunglass and had a lit cigarette in his mouth (\u53fc\u7740\u4e00\u6839\u9999\u70dfdi\u0101o zhe y\u012b g\u0113n xi\u0101ng y\u0101n<\/strong>). The act was praised by the authorities, but not all of Weibo users were impressed. An emoji won\u2019t cause someone to smoke (\u62bd\u70dfch\u014du y\u0101n<\/strong>), as one<\/a> of them wrote.<\/p>\n

An emoji won\u2019t convince someone to quit (\u6212\u70dfji\u00e8 y\u0101n<\/strong>), either. Nicotine (\u5c3c\u53e4\u4e01n\u00ed g\u01d4 d\u012bng<\/strong>) is an addictive substance. For heavy smokers it is extremely hard to quit. This<\/a> article in Chinese gives useful advice for smokers who wish to abandon this bad habit. A cute Chinese children\u2019s song encourages smokers\u2019 kids to exhort their parents: \u597d\u7238\u7238\uff0c\u8bf7\u4f60\u628a\u70df\u6212\u6389<\/strong> (h\u01ceo b\u00e0 ba, q\u01d0ng n\u01d0 b\u01ce y\u0101n ji\u00e8 di\u00e0o, good dad, please quit smoking<\/em>).
