It seems like just yesterday I was writing my post on <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/summer-in-chinese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">talking about summer in Chinese<\/a> with vocabulary words like <strong>water park<\/strong> (\u6c34\u4e0a\u4e50\u56ed \u2013 shu\u01d0 sh\u00e0ng l\u00e8 yu\u00e1n) and <strong>beach<\/strong> (\u6d77\u6ee9 \u2013 h\u01cei t\u0101n). Time flies, because next week students will bust out their track suits, red scarves, and \u201c<strong>Safety<\/strong>\u201d (\u5b89\u5168 \u2013 \u0100n qu\u00e1n) hats. Speaking of vocabulary, make sure you sign up for our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparent.com\/word-of-the-day\/today\/chinese.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mandarin word of the day<\/a> so you can learn something new every day of the week.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">The School Year in China<\/h2>\n<p>In China, the school year generally goes from the beginning of <strong>September<\/strong> (\u4e5d\u6708 &#8211; ji\u01d4 yu\u00e8) until the end of <strong>June<\/strong> (\u516d\u6708 &#8211; li\u00f9 yu\u00e8). Students attend school five days a week, usually starting at 7:30-8 and finishing around 3. In some areas, students don&#8217;t finish the school day until 5 PM. Other major holidays during the school year include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mid-Autumn Festival<\/strong> (\u4e2d\u79cb\u8282 &#8211; zh\u014dng qi\u016b ji\u00e9)<\/li>\n<li><strong>National Day<\/strong> (\u56fd\u5e86\u8282 &#8211; gu\u00f3 q\u00ecng ji\u00e9)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tomb Sweeping Festival<\/strong> (\u6e05\u660e\u8282 &#8211; q\u012bng m\u00edng ji\u00e9)<\/li>\n<li><strong>May Day\/Labor Day<\/strong> (\u52b3\u52a8\u8282 &#8211; l\u00e1o d\u00f2ng ji\u00e9)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dragon Boat Festival<\/strong> (\u7aef\u5348\u8282 &#8211; du\u0101n w\u01d4 ji\u00e9)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most of those holidays are just a long weekend, but National Day is called a &#8220;<strong>Golden Week<\/strong>&#8221; (\u9ec4\u91d1\u5468 &#8211; hu\u00e1ng j\u012bn zh\u014du). Most students have the entire first week of October off for this holiday, and families all over the country set out to travel. It can be a pretty chaotic time, so many just choose to stay home and relax. After all, there&#8217;s still lots of homework to be done!<\/p>\n<p>For high school students in China, the most important part of their entire academic life is the intense <em><strong>gao kao<\/strong> <\/em>(\u9ad8\u8003 &#8211; g\u0101o k\u01ceo) exam. It&#8217;s a grueling exam, lasting for a few days at nine hours a day. To make matters worse, it&#8217;s also extremely vital for them to succeed. Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gratefulgypsies.com\/best-online-english-teaching-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I teach English online<\/a> these days, I actually work more in the summer. It&#8217;s nice being able to save some extra money, but I&#8217;m looking forward to having my evenings back when my students are back in school!<\/p>\n<p>Students in China are involved in several extracurricular activities, in fact. When I ask my students what they did that day, their answers typically include a variety of other classes &#8211; <strong>basketball<\/strong> (\u7bee\u7403 &#8211; l\u00e1n qi\u00fa), <strong>piano<\/strong> (\u94a2\u7434 &#8211; g\u0101ng q\u00edn), <strong>calligraphy<\/strong> (\u4e66\u6cd5 &#8211; sh\u016b f\u01ce), <strong>swimming<\/strong> (\u6e38\u6cf3 &#8211; y\u00f3u y\u01d2ng), and more on top of online English lessons. These kids work really hard!
