On that Tuesday, China began a withdrawal (<strong>\u64a4\u56de <\/strong>ch\u00e8 hu\u00ed) of medical staff (<strong>\u533b\u62a4\u4eba\u5458 <\/strong>y\u012b h\u00f9 r\u00e9n yu\u00e1n) from Wuhan, the city considered the origin of the coronavirus\u00a0pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of the year, a new pneumonia swept (<strong>\u5e2d\u5377 <\/strong>x\u00ed ju\u01cen) Wuhan. The city was overwhelmed with hundreds of new cases of coronavirus each day.\u00a0Local hospitals have been flooded with patients. Thousands lay sick in hurriedly constructed <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/new-field-hospital-was-built-in-wuhan-in-10-days\/\">hospitals<\/a>. Its cumulative number of confirmed (<strong>\u786e\u8bca <\/strong>qu\u00e8 zh\u011bn) infections reached 50,004 as of March 16. <strong>\u6b66\u6c49\u751f\u75c5\u4e86<\/strong> (W\u01d4h\u00e0n sh\u0113ng b\u00ecng le, Wuhan is sick).<\/p>\n<p>Over 42,000 medical workers from across the country were dispatched to aid Hubei since the virus outbreak. They were praised as <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/a-new-chinese-phrase\/\">\u6700\u7f8e\u7684\u9006\u884c\u8005<\/a> (zu\u00ec m\u011bi n\u00ec x\u00edng zh\u011b,<em> heroes in harm\u2019s way<\/em>), for traveling to the frontline to fight the epidemic (<strong>\u6297\u75ab <\/strong>k\u00e0ng y\u00ec) in a race against time. They were not afraid of life and death (<strong>\u4e0d\u60e7\u751f\u6b7b <\/strong>b\u00f9 j\u00f9 sh\u0113ng s\u01d0 ), leaving their families behind, putting themselves at risk for strangers, giving all they can to cure (<strong>\u6cbb\u7597 <\/strong>zh\u00ec li\u00e1o) Wuhan.<\/p>\n<p>While the virus is spreading (<strong>\u8513\u5ef6 <\/strong>m\u00e0n y\u00e1n) quickly globally, its progress in China has slowed since mid-February. The epidemic outbreak in Hubei has been subdued markedly since the beginning of March. A first daily tally in single digits of eight new coronavirus infections in Wuhan were announced on March 12. Green traffic lights were turned on all their way, and police officers at the expressway tollgate saluted while watching their vehicles leave. At railway stations police officers saluted medics who entered the station and boarded the train.<\/p>\n<p>The angels in white (<strong>\u767d\u8863\u5929\u4f7f <\/strong>b\u00e1i y\u012b ti\u0101n sh\u01d0) also received a warm welcome (<strong>\u70ed\u60c5\u8fce\u63a5 <\/strong>r\u00e8 q\u00edng y\u00edng ji\u0113) back home. The planes carrying them home were received with a water salute (<strong>\u6c34\u95e8\u793c <\/strong>shu\u01d0 m\u00e9n l\u01d0) after landing.
