A much-discussed drama involving the Chinese tech giant Tencent and the well-known Chili sauce brand Lao Gan Ma erupted last June.<\/p>\n

Lao Gan Ma<\/a> (\u8001\u5e72\u5988<\/strong> L\u01ceo g\u00e0n m\u0101) is one of the most favored chili sauces in China.\u00a0The company was\u00a0founded by an illiterate woman from a mountain village\u00a0who built her small noodles restaurant into a multibillion-dollar global sauce empire. Lao Gan Ma was established in 1996 and became the largest producer and seller of pepper products in China. Its output value is estimated at billions of RMB every year.<\/p>\n

Tencent (\u817e\u8baf<\/strong> T\u00e9ng x\u00f9n) is a Chinese conglomerate\u00a0that specializes in various\u00a0internet-related services and products. Its many services include\u00a0social network,\u00a0web portals,\u00a0e-commerce,\u00a0internet services,\u00a0payment systems, and\u00a0online games. Two of its famous products are QQ, a popular\u00a0instant messaging\u00a0platform in China; and WeChat, a popular social mobile application in China. With total equity of 465.162 billion RMB (as of 2019), Tencent is one of the world\u2019s largest and valuable companies.<\/p>\n

The incident began when a Chinese court (\u6cd5\u9662 <\/strong>f\u01ce yu\u00e0n) had frozen over 16 million RMB (around US$2.3 million) worth of assets belonging to Lao Gan Ma following a complaint filed by Tencent. The finance (\u8d22\u7ecf <\/strong>c\u00e1i j\u012bng) headlines announced:<\/p>\n

Tencent requests the seizure of 16.24 million RMB worth assets of Guizhou Lao Gan Ma Company<\/em><\/p>\n

Tencent sued (\u8d77\u8bc9 <\/strong>q\u01d0 s\u00f9) the popular Chinese chili sauce brand over a contract dispute. According to Tencent, they have signed (\u7b7e\u8ba2<\/strong>qi\u0101n d\u00ecng) a marketing contract with Lao Gan Ma and delivered marketing promotions on their online platforms since then. Lao Gan Ma had broken the contract they signed in March 2019, and failed to pay advertising fees worth tens of millions RMB.<\/p>\n

Lao Gan Ma quickly issued a statement (\u58f0\u660e <\/strong>sh\u0113ng m\u00edng), claiming they had no commercial cooperation with Tencent:<\/p>\n

The next day, Guizhou police released a statement, saying Tencent appears to have been duped by a group of people masquerading as representatives of the sauce company. Three people had been detained (\u5211\u62d8 <\/strong>x\u00edng j\u016b), accused of forging (\u4f2a\u9020 <\/strong>w\u011bi z\u00e0o) Lao Gan Ma\u2019s company seal\u00a0and pretending to work for the firm\u2019s marketing team. The scammers signed a cooperation agreement with Tencent, China\u2019s biggest video game firm. Their aim was to obtain online game codes, which the fraudsters later resold online.<\/p>\n

Several days later, the two companies released a joint statement, reading:<\/p>\n
